Previously a Viking settlement, the town of Wick straddles the River Wick and Wick Bay at the north east tip of the Scottish Highlands. It was Europe''s busiest herring port in the 19th century, although today, you''re more likely to spot tourists than fishermen.

The Wick Heritage Centre (which is actually situated in Pultneytown, the part of Wick that lies across the river) is a great place to soak up some of the local culture and heritage, and includes artefacts from the fishing trade in days gone by, offering a fascinating insight into the area''s history.

Explore the Castle of Old Wick on foot via a winding clifftop trail that leads from the charming village of Staxigoe via Noss Head Lighthouse to the castle itself, perched on the cliff top and offering stunning views out to sea. Or go on a tour of the Pultney Distillery, which has produced its own Single Malt Scotch Whisky since 1826; warm up with a complimentary dram whilst you explore the visitor centre and souvenir shop.
