Set into the hillside, the house is built on various levels. There is a superb lounge with deep leather suite and plenty of seating for six (although the photographs show a wood burning stove in the lounge, it is not available to guests, it is display only). Sea views from the picture windows add to the charm. There are three large bedrooms, all en-suite, as well as a family bathroom. The bright kitchen is extremely well-equipped and a separate dining room adds to the feeling of spaciousness.
    Heatherdale makes an ideal base for exploring the beautiful area of Wester Ross. Hill walkers will be spoilt for choice, with the Torridon mountains to the south and the Assynt range to the north. From Gairloch harbour, you can choose from a variety of boat trips, which include whale and dolphin watching, to sea-angling, and there are pontoons available for those who wish to bring their own boat. The area is a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise. Sea eagles are common to the region and otters, seals and a superb array of birdlife can be seen in the area. There are a number of excellent sea and wildlife boat trips that can be booked from the harbour, as well as sea fishing trips and excursions. There is also a wonderful voyage out to the uninhabited Shaints islands (the only trip from mainland Scotland to these remote islands) to view the millions of nesting sea-birds, spotting whales and dolphins on the way. The excellent nine hole golf course is just a few minutes along the road and is situated beside a golden sandy beach. Another popular activity is pony trekking at Red Point. The world famous Inverewe Gardens at Poolewe and the Gairloch Heritage Museum are both worth a visit. The Gairloch Leisure Centre provides many sporting activities and there is an indoor swimming pool at Poolewe, six miles. Gairloch also has a good choice of pubs and restaurants, which specialise in sea food dishes and other local fare, the nearest one being just a five minute walk from the cottage. There are also many small coffee and craft shops in the area. This area is designated as the largest Geopark in Europe. Majestic mountains interspersed with pretty lochs make this a climber’s and hill walker’s paradise. The nearby town of Ullapool, just over two miles away is absolutely charming. Built as a model town by Thomas Telford, its whitewashed buildings and wide sweeping harbour never fail to impress the visitor. Seals can be seen bobbing amongst the fishing boats as they unload their catches. There is an excellent selection of restaurants, bistros and small shops along the seafront and boat trips run from the harbour to explore the coastline, including a wonderful pleasure trip out to the nearby Summer Isles. Ullapool is also the terminus for the ferry to Stornoway in the Outer Isles. There is a fascinating museum as well as an excellent sports centre in the town and a wide variety of events, galas and activities take place here throughout the year. This area of North West Scotland is renowned for its pristine sandy beaches, ancient settlements and incredible sandstone mountains. On a trip through the local area known as Assynt the visitor can explore the Bone Caves (a series of caves and tunnels which have recently been found to contain bones and fossils of long extinct animals, dating back over 4500 years) and the ruins of Ardvreck Castle perched on the edge of Loch Assynt, before arriving in the pretty fishing port of Lochinver. The nearby white shell beach of Achmelvich is simply stunning. Canoeing, sailing, body boarding, golf, fishing (sea, river and loch), horse riding, mountain biking, climbing and hill walking are all enjoyed in the area.
