It occupies the site of a house which was once the resting place of Prince Charles Edward Stuart during the 1745 Jacobite Revolution – a connection commemorated in a nearby meadow, where seven beech trees symbolise the Seven Men of Moidart, the sum total of the army which he brought from France.
    Just a short walk away from the house lies Loch Moidart, where vast expanses of sand are thrown up by the sea at low tide. At the seaward end of this beautiful inlet, sit the ancient ruins of 14th-century clan castle of Tioram (once the stronghold of the Lord of the Isles), providing a focal point for gloriously scenic views. Between nearby Loch Shiel and Loch Sunart, a trail leads through the Ariundle Oakwoods Nature Reserve – a haven for wildlife – whilst southwards, the coast is punctuated by bays of white sand excellent for fishing and shell-collecting, or admiring the views over hill, loch and sea from horse back. Fort William, gateway to Ben Nevis, is a scenic drive away, and the Western Isles, Skye and Ardnamurchan are all accessible. Sailing at Acharade, 6 miles. Golf 30 minutes’ drive. Inn at Glenuig, 4 miles. Shops 7 miles.

Examples of Sir John’s creativity can be found on the land and nearby, such as the suspension bridge over the spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach, both popular beauty spots close by.

    Visitors are also welcome to wander through the grounds of the house which meander down to the river below. Fishing can also be arranged on the owner’s private stretch of the River Broom, famed for its salmon, trout and sea-trout.

    Just 10 minutes’ drive away is the charming fishing village of Ullapool, which has a good selection of small shops as well as excellent local bars and restaurants. This lovely converted stable makes an ideal base for a real Highland holiday, with spectacular walks, munros to climb and cycling routes to explore. There is plenty to see and do in the surrounding area. Canoeing, sailing, fishing, riding, bird watching and golf are all enjoyed locally.

The small railway station is a halt on the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh railway route; voted as one of the most scenic railway lines in the world. The surrounding area is renowned for its magnificent landscapes, incorporating mountains, rivers, lochs and sea. A paradise for lovers of the great outdoors, it offers unlimited sporting opportunities: climbing, hill-walking, fishing, canoeing, diving, sailing and mountain-biking are all available close by. There are some wonderful walks direct from the property, with miles of hills, riverside and forestry to explore, either on foot or by bike.

    The nearby village of Lochcarron is particularly charming. Set right on the shores of the loch, surrounded by the spectacular hills and mountains of Wester Ross, Lochcarron is bounded by the sea-loch on one side and attractive cottages and houses that straddle the main street on the other. There are a number of pubs, cafes and shops here, as well as a golf course open to visitors which has a fantastic 9 hole golf course (12 tees) situated right on the banks of the loch with stunning views, open all year round. This club is over a hundred years old and is one of the most beautiful spots in the highlands, with a short but demanding course for all levels. A visit to the Carron pottery and restaurant, less than a mile away, is a must with fantastic crafts and renown food (open year round), with the seafood bar at Kishorn another culinary favourite which has won countless awards for its local sustainably sourced fresh seafood, 13 miles. Lochcarron Weavers, also based in Kishorn, stock a wonderful range of handmade tartans and luxury knitwear and are some of the finest in the whole of Scotland.
