    Gordon Castle certainly has a fascinating history; from its initial connections with King Robert the Bruce to being instrumental in creating the first legal whisky distillery at Glenlivet, and of course its continuing association with the famous Gordon Highlanders, it is a wonderful place to visit.     Nowadays the estate is renowned for being one of the finest sporting estates in Scotland, where fishing and shooting are well catered for. The cottage takes its name from the cowrie shell, which is avidly searched for and can be found on the nearby shoreline. Cowries have been valued for centuries in many parts of the world. In China and Africa they were used as currency (the Chinese character for money is a cowrie shaped shell) and these marine gastropods are still sought by collectors today. There is a collection of these tiny, ribbed shells left in the cottage and visitors are welcome to add to the collection (or take their finds home as a unique memento!).
