The ancient village of Acharacle lies at the southern end of Loch Shiel in the Ardnamuchan peninsular in the western Highlands. Surrounded by the most beautiful Highland countryside, this area is popular with naturalists, hill walkers and those who come to escape the hustle and bustle of modern living.

The village itself has a few local amenities, including a small grocery shop, cafe and traditional fish and chip shop, and you''re within reach of the larger settlements of Fort William and Mallaig. Don''t miss a visit to the ruined remains of Castle Tioram on the island of Eilean Tioram, the traditional seat of Clan Macdonald of Clan Ranald.

Anglers can enjoy fishing for salmon and trout in Loch Sheil and there’s sea fishing at nearby Loch Sunart, fishing tuition trips are also available to book in the area. Local walks include the Singing Sands walk (around 6 miles) or the Silver Walk, which takes you along the banks of Loch Moidart from Castle Tioram. Or head for the golden sandy beaches of Dorlin (just 6km away), or Ardtoe.

During the summer months, the Acharacle Produce Markets at the Village Hall is not to be missed; you can try tempting homemade soups and locally baked goods or pick up handcrafted gifts for friends and family back home.     Ardnamurchan, the most westerly point of the British mainland, is one of the most beautiful, unspoilt areas of the Highlands. There are mountains, glens, forests, white coral sands and turquoise waters warmed by the gulf stream. The village is remote with few services, although a local hotel serves meals and there is a well-stocked convenience store with post office and petrol pumps. The detached holiday property stands in a sheltered valley approached by a rough, unmade road. The road from Corran Ferry is single track. An alternative route through Fort William, Lochailort and Moidart is 12 miles longer but offers better roads. The wildlife in the area is exceptional. Buzzards, along with sea and golden eagles dominate the skies. Red, roe, fallow and muntjac deer roam forest and moor, and the rare pine marten and Scottish wildcat have a haven here. Fishing is available locally at Loch Mudle and the local hill lochs. The Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, built in 1849, is well worth a visit. There are several stunning beaches nearby; Portuairk beach is within 1½ miles, Sanna beach is 5 miles by road, but only 1½ miles on foot. Kilmory and Achateny beaches are about 7 miles away on the north coast. Achateny has a reef, in which there are sea anemones, eels, fish and sea cucumbers. Shop 3½ miles, hotel ½ mile, beach 1 mile, Isle of Mull car ferry 4 miles.

    The village of Arisaig (gaelic for the Safe Place) is located on a sheltered shore of a beautiful and dramatic sea loch. Approached via the scenic road known as the ’road to the isles’ which passes through Glenfinnan and Lochailort, the area is renowned for its wonderful scenery, incredible wildlife and wealth of sporting activities. Cruises to the nearby islands of Eigg, Muck and Rum run from the harbour. Sightings of Minke whales, dolphins, porpoises, basking sharks, otters and puffins can all be encountered at various times of the year. There are a wide variety of water sports available, including sea kayaking, sailing and canoeing. There is a thriving sea kayaking centre in the village, with professional guides and equipment for hire. Small private craft can also be launched from the harbour slipway. The local golf course at Taigh is accepted to be one of the prettiest courses in Britain. this 9 hole course, right on the edge of the sea is a classic seaside links in a breathtaking setting. The immediately surrounding area is a haven for walkers and there are a variety of spectacular routes direct from the property, suitable for all abilities. The town of Fort William, just 40 minutes drive away is rightly known as the outdoor capital of the UK and the wealth of activities, outdoor pursuits and places of interest available are world renowned. Climbing and hill walking in this area are second to none and the Nevis range offers an amazing variety of other sporting activities all year round, including para gliding, skiing, snowboarding and a world class mountain bike course. The less energetic can take a spectacular ride on the gondola that runs up the side of Aanoch Mor and enjoy a meal at the famous mountain restaurant at the top or enjoy a cycle ride along the scenic Great Glen Cycle route that runs along the side of the Caledonian canal (bikes available to hire locally). In the summer months the West Highland steam train or Hogwart’s Express of Harry Potter fame passes through Arisaig as it runs along the wonderfully scenic route through to Mallaig. Visitors to Mallaig can take the boat across the sea to Skye, returning via Skye bridge to complete a spectacular circular tour. With miles of sandy beaches right on the doorstep, Gobhlan - Taighe provides and ideal base for families and groups wishing to enjoy this totally unspoilt Highland area.

Between nearby Loch Shiel and Loch Sunart, a trail leads through the Ariundle Oakwoods Nature Reserve – a haven for wildlife – whilst southwards, the coast is punctuated by bays of white sand excellent for fishing and shell-collecting, or admiring the views over hill, loch and sea from horse back. Fort William, gateway to Ben Nevis, is a scenic drive away, and the Western Isles, Skye and Ardnamurchan are all accessible. Sailing at Acharade, 6 miles. Golf 30 minutes’ drive.
