Glasgow and the Clyde Valley is the perfect location for a relaxing self-catering break in truly beautiful rural surroundings and has the added benefit of having one of Scotland’s most vibrant and fascinating cities close by for great days out.

The city of Glasgow has a rich heritage, full of classical architecture, first class attractions, important museums and fascinating galleries, including works by Glasgow’s own Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It also has excellent city centre shopping and top class restaurants.

Glasgow’s rich artistic heritage makes it a big draw for visitors looking for one of Britain’s most unique and enjoyable cultural experiences, for example the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum offers a fine collection of classic and contemporary artworks and some fantastic exhibits and the Glasgow School of Art is also highly recommended for its year round exhibits and houses the internationally renowned Charles Rennie Mackintosh design collection.

The city has a lot of green open spaces, parks and gardens such as the Botanic Gardens including Kibble Palace, an ornate Victorian glasshouse full of exotic plants from around the world and Pollok Country Park which is the largest park in Glasgow and home to the famous Burrell Collection of impressionist artworks and Pollok House which showcases one of the grand country houses of the 1930s.

Move a short distance out of the city and you’ll soon be enveloped by the quiet beauty of the lush Clyde Valley which is characterised by having some great country walks and safe cycling routes, historical attractions and country parks as well as a number of grand estates that can be found dotted throughout the Firth of Clyde.

There are two World Heritage sites in the Clyde Valley; evidence of the Roman conquests can be found at the Antonine Wall which was built in 140 AD and extends some 60 km from Old Kilpatrick on the north bank of the River Clyde to Bo’ness on the Firth of Forth. The New Lanark World Heritage site is a wonderfully restored 18th century cotton mill village set amongst a spectacular valley.

Just to the north of Glasgow it’s not long before you’re in The Trossachs National Park and Lock Lomond; great for peaceful days.

Sports include golf, sailing, windsurfing, cycling and horse riding, and cruises around the loch and its many islands are available.

    The top of Duncryne Hill is only 20 minutes walk through the woods and field, and provides one of the best 360-degree views in Scotland and a spectacular panorama of Loch Lomond. A nature conservancy area is within walking distance where a large variety of wildlife may be seen including deer, ducks, geese, herons, raptors and swans. Local visits include distilleries and an aquarium. The numerous attractions in Glasgow and Stirling are within 40 minutes driving or the former can be easily reached by train from Balloch, 3 miles away. Glasgow and Edinburgh airports are close to hand. Shop ½ mile.
