As you might expect from the ancestral home of Scotland’s monarchs, Fife has a rich heritage and some wonderful historic attractions, as well as a stunning coastline, quiet beautiful countryside and one of the highest concentrations of top class golf courses in Britain.

This small county is packed with a great diversity of landscapes, extending from the Firth of Forth in the south which includes Dunfermline (Scotland’s former capital) and the famous Forth Road and Rail bridges, to St. Andrews and the rural north. All along extends its eastern coastline with pretty bays, dramatic cliffs, Blue Flag sandy beaches and old fishing villages.

St. Andrews is well known for its golf courses and is home to Royal and Ancient Golf Course. But in addition the town, which is Scotland’s oldest university town, has a charming old-world feel and is close to an expansive beach. St Andrews cathedral may be a shadow of its former self, but well worth visiting. You can spend hours exploring the history and admiring the views here.

Exploring to the south of St. Andrews the coastline is dotted with small fishing villages, such as Crail, Anstruther, Pittenween, East Nuek and St. Monans. The Fife Coastal Path extends along this coastline and is perfect for bracing walks and magnificent sea views, where if you’re lucky you might see Grey seals, dolphins and basking sharks. Boat trips are available from Anstruther to the Isle of May where many sea birds nest at certain times of the year.

Of note is Falkland Palace, which was a rather regal holiday home for many Stuart monarchs, including Mary, Queen of Scots. Beautifully maintained, you can explore the palace and gardens at your leisure – including Britain’s oldest tennis court. Also of interest are Kellie Castle and Garden which dates back to the 14th century and contains fascinating interiors and lovely wooded gardens.

    Located in West Wemyss, a charming conservation village on the shores of the Forth, Driftwood Cottage sits on a sunny hill which has views towards Edinburgh, and is only a short stroll down the seafront and the old harbour.  Driftwood Cottage offers ample accommodation for a family of four and the cottage is well equipped with all you need during your stay.  There are two comfortable bedrooms and a small enclosed garden to the rear and the property is pet friendly.  From the front of the cottage you can glimpse a view of the sea.  West Wemyss is a traditional Fife coast village with harbour, creels and white-washed cottages, it is quaint and tiny but it has its own Cafe and Bistro and is only minutes away from central Scotland’s major road networks.  Scotland’s beautiful capital city Edinburgh is less than an hour away and St Andrews is only 40 minutes.
    West Wemyss has a lovely cafe and bistro The Walk Inn which is only 150 meters away and serves homemade food and regularly hosts quizzes and social events.  The coastline is peaceful and one of our favourite walks is to head from the cottage on foot along the coast to Dysart, stopping at the Harbour Masters House for coffee, then walking around the harbour and along the beach to Ravenscraig Park and Castle, great on your own or with a four legged friend.  Our guest pack outlines other walks and places to visit locally. 
    In 1985 the village became part of the designated conservation area, and over the years the harbour has been redeveloped for leisure craft, the old village restored and coastal defences improved.  The village has quaint old buildings and narrow steppped lanes leading between the streets.
    Driftwood Cottage is built in the style of the traditional Fife fisherman’s homes but was completed only recently, so it’s bright and modern and offers all the comfortand luxury you need to really unwind on your holiday.  The owners are passionate about promoting the best of Scotland and are delighted to be able to offer you a flavour of this through their beautiful holiday home in Fife.
    With its white-washed walls, sash-and-case windows and red pan tiled roof, Driftwood Cottage really is as pretty as a picture.  From the front of the house there are views of the Forth and the Bass Rock, and the back looks onto quiet woodland.  The house is immaculately presented and offers spacious and welcoming accommodation for 4 people on 2 levels.  Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms with quality memory topped mattresses.  Either King and Super King (US Californian King) or King and Twin beds and a fresh, contemporary bathroom.  Downstairs is a large open-plan living/dining area, a well-fitted kitchen and separate cloakroom.  3 TV’s all with DVD players, an iPod docking station, and a selection of DVD’s books and board-games.

Cellardyke has its own harbour, bar and small shops locally, and Anstruther is within walking distance with its historic harbour, quaint shops, bars and restaurants or you can enjoy fish and chips from the award-winning restaurant. The Fife Coastal Path runs through the village, with historic castles, pretty fishing villages and many beautiful beaches and coves to visit along the way. The cottage was originally the local general store and the ramp to the utility room and garden was used by the pony and trap for deliveries and there are still the names of some of the workers carved in to the beams dating back to 1904. It is just 9 miles from the ancient University town of St Andrews and its famous golf courses, as well as many other local courses close by. Edinburgh, Stirling and Perth are all within an hour’s drive.
