Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland’s south west is a hidden gem of tranquil countryside and uncrowded coastlines and has a natural beauty to match anywhere in the UK. It’s perfect for exploring the abundant beauty of one of Scotland’s most stunning locations where you’ll find open landscapes, fantastic heritage, wonderful food and drink and a wealth of activities and attractions.

The 300 square miles that make up the Galloway Forest are a magnet for walkers and mountain bikers and consist of not only miles of forest but also heather clad moors, tranquil valleys and some 250 lochs; the ideal place for outdoor pursuits and great wildlife. In fact Dumfries and Galloway has four National Nature Reserves where you can see a wide variety of bird life, wildflowers and nature in its natural environments. These are stunningly beautiful open landscapes that help preserve our precious and threatened wild places.

Head for the coast if you’re looking for quiet sandy beaches, here there are three National Scenic Locations extending from the Mull of Galloway towards Cumbria.

The region is steeped in history, for example Caerlaverock Castle’s often turbulent history is reflected in its architecture, with a twin towered gatehouse, moat and battlements, which once made it an imposing sight for invaders but now serves to make it a fantastic family-friendly visitor attraction, with nature trail, children’s adventure park and more.

Drumlanrig Castle is similarly impressive, offering late 17th century Renaissance architecture with the addition of 90,000 beautiful acres to explore in the surrounding area. If you fancy something a little more exotic then the Logan Botanic Garden is something of a warm weather oasis. Located on the south-western tip of Scotland, the region receives a Gulf Stream climate which allows the cultivation of many tropical and semi-tropical plants providing a fantastic day out for visitors.

If all that warm weather leaves you seeking refreshment get along to the intriguingly named Cream o'' Galloway, a fantastic ice cream visitor centre, which is sure to delight the kids. If you have a sweet tooth then you could also include a visit to The CocoaBean Company chocolate factory and visitor centre!

Many quaint villages await exploration including the coastal villages of the Isle of Whithorn, Port William (known as the Machars of Galloway and presented with the Pride of Galloway award) and the popular village of Portpatrick with stunning views over the North Channel to the Irish coast. A trip to Ireland from Stranraer also makes for a good day out. Dumfries, with shops, restaurants, museums and theatre, lies 10 miles away, while Castle Douglas, Scotland’s Food Town (8 miles), is a traditional market town with shops specialising in local produce.
