The Argyll and Bute region has been a favourite with holidaymakers for years and it’s easy to understand why with so much beautiful countryside, lochs and coastline to admire.

And the beautiful isles of Bute and Arran are easily accessed by ferry or visitors’ own boats. Rothesay on Bute is only 12 miles and offers alternative shops, restaurants and bars as well as visitor attractions, including the renowned Mount Stuart; while Loch Lomond National park is just 15 miles - adding to the cottage’s appeal for walkers and cyclists of all abilities - and boasting breathtaking scenery with dramatic peaks, waterfalls, hidden caves and mysterious forests. However, easy loch-side walks start right outside the door. The nearby scenic viewing platform overlooking the Kyles is renowned as one of the most picturesque in Scotland - and many of the local beaches match this description.     The wildlife here is fantastic; even from the comfort of the cottage one can see a variety of bird life, especially at low tide when a large sandbank is exposed. Otters have regularly been spotted in front of the house. Seals and gannets are also regular visitors. The Dutchmans is a great base from which to explore this stunningly beautiful area and to sample the wide range of activities on offer. The Argyll Forest, part of the simply gorgeous Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, is on the doorstep and has numerous forest tracks, marked walks, cycle ways and wonderful waterfalls to explore. Walkers should seek out the Cowal Way, a long distance walk running from Portavadie to Arrochar. A number of public gardens are located in the area such as Ardkinglas, Crarae and Benmore Botanic Gardens with its avenue of giant Redwood trees. There are 3 golf courses available locally and many opportunities for a spot of fishing. At Colintraive there is a short ferry crossing over to the picturesque Isle of Bute and a visit to the fabulous Victorian Gothic Mount Stuart House is a must. Tighnabruaich has a sailing school and a selection of small shops. Dunoon has a good centre for shopping, leisure facilities and a small cinema. Inveraray is also a great day out with the Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll and the 19th century Inveraray Jail both well worth a visit. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

    This beautifully renovated and extended cottage enjoys an idyllic location just a hundred yards or so from the crystal clear waters of the Lyne of Lorne. Located at the end of a rough track approximately 1 mile long, Cliff Cottage stands detached and makes a wonderful retreat from which to explore this scenic area and to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside.
    An easy walk away is the pretty fishing village of Port Appin, which overlooks Loch Linnhe with its several islands and backdrop of mountains. From here ferries to the Isle of Lismore can be taken, where several places of interest can be visited. Apart from the fortified Tirefour Broch, there are the ruins of the 12th-century Castle Coeffin and the abandoned quarry village of Sailean with its disused kilns, as well as the ruins of Achanduin Castle and the island’s highest point Barr Mor. To the north of Port Appin, the romantic Castle Stalker can be found - much loved by photographers.
    Within easy reach, the Victorian resort of Oban is the second largest town in Argyll. It has the McCaig’s Folly as its landmark, which was built in imitation of Rome’s Colosseum. A tour of the Oban Distillery is a popular experience for whisky lovers, and for younger family members, the Oban Rare Breeds Farm Park a few miles away offers a delightful visit where baby animals can be met at the children’s corner. Boat trips to Mull, Iona, Staffa, Seal Island and the Treshnish Isles can be made from the harbour at Oban, whilst a ferry takes visitors to the Isle of Kerrera - a small easily explored island from where panoramic views of Mull, the Slate Islands, Lismore and beyond can be admired.
    In the opposite direction lies Fort William, with Ben Nevis - Britain’s highest summit - rising up in the background. One of the Highland’s most impressive glens, Glen Nevis, can be found just a further 10-minute drive away and apart from being the starting point for the ascent of Scotland’s highest peak, has been the location for several films, including Rob Roy and Braveheart.
    The area is superb for walking, fishing and boat trips, whilst further afield are the fabulous mountains of Glencoe (with skiing in winter). Shop ¾ mile. Pub 1 mile.

It is ideally placed for those wishing to explore the west coast by day and sample the variety of restaurants and bars in the evening. Oban is known as the ’seafood capital of the UK’ and the ’gateway to the isles’. It is also home to the magnificent McCaigs Folly which towers above the town and it boasts a leisure centre and cinema. From the pier, regular boat trips leave for the inner isles, including Mull, Iona and Staffa, or a shorter 10 minute boat trip to the Isle of Kerrera makes a great day out. Argyll is steeped in history, with breathtaking scenery, and an abundance of wildlife. Thrill seekers can enjoy a sea safari trip to catch a glimpse of dolphins, whales and eagles, as well as the famous Corryvrekan Whirlpool. Forest trails offer leisurely walks, or mountain biking and a variety of other outdoor pursuits are available locally including kayaking, sailing, golf and fishing. Both Fort William and Glencoe are easily reached, are steeped in history and offer some popular climbing and skiing routes. Other places of interest include the Kintyre Peninsula, Kilmartin Glen and Inveraray. Bus and train terminals are within walking distance of the apartment.

    Late 16th century Ardbrecknish House is in a magnificent Highland setting with wonderful views of mountains and glens. These attractive holiday properties are set amid 20 acres of mature woodland close to beautiful Loch Awe - 26 miles long and Britain’s longest freshwater loch. A whole host of indoor and outdoor amenities are available on site, and although the setting is quiet and peaceful, it is within easy reach of restaurants, shops, golf courses, and the small village of Kilmartin Glen and museum, the richest area in Europe for prehistoric remains, making these properties an ideal holiday location and a perfect touring base. A visitors’ reception/library area provides a wealth of information on the local history, archaeology, wildlife, gardens, forest and hillside walks, as well as the year-round activities available around Argyll and the West Highlands.
    The Ardbrecknish Room has a welcoming open fire, small dance floor, pool table, darts and Scottish Carpet Bowls. The adjoining cosy traditional bar with its woodburner provides a perfect way to end the day; perhaps sampling one or two of the many malt whiskies.
    At the shore, just 10 minutes’ walk, motor boats, rowing boats and canoes can be hired to explore the enchanting islands and ruined castles of the loch, or maybe fishing the loch for salmon, char, monster pike and brown trout. A British record brown trout of 31lbs 10oz was caught in March 2002. Tuition and/or a fishing guide is available by arrangement.
    The surrounding area offers a wealth of interest and fantastic scenery. Opposite Ardbrecknish is majestic Ben Cruachan, and further north are the impressive Glen Coe and Ben Nevis ranges, a mecca for hill walkers all year round. Both regions have ski centres and within an hour’s drive is the busy town of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’, from where modern ferries take you to Mull and Iona, the cradle of Christianity, Staffa, the inspiration for Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave Overture, and to other Hebridean gems. Oban has a sea life centre and an excellent golf course. The elegant town of Inveraray on Loch Fyne only 12 miles away, to the south is the Crinan Canal with its stepped locks, you can walk or drive a delightful route along its 9-mile length. Family-friendly bar and restaurant on site.
