The Argyll and Bute region has been a favourite with holidaymakers for years and it’s easy to understand why with so much beautiful countryside, lochs and coastline to admire.

The cottage has a state of the art air heat recovery system supplying the underfloor heating and a heat recovery ventilation system. The main living space is open plan combining the living, dining and kitchen areas into a fantastic living space for all the family to gather. The living room has two large windows ensuring guests can enjoy a great view when relaxing and a wonderful open fire with oak mantle piece. The kitchen is fully fitted and includes a large, wooden family dining table. Downstairs has a spacious double bedroom with dressing area, TV, DVD player and an en-suite. Upstairs has three further bedrooms all with loch views. The shoreline is accessed via the other side of the quiet country lane and a canoe or kayak can be easily launched from here. A boat mooring is available on request to the owner and boats can be launched locally. Fishing is available from the rocky shoreline.

    The wildlife here is fantastic; even from the comfort of the cottage one can see a variety of bird life, especially at low tide when a large sandbank is exposed. Otters have regularly been spotted in front of the house. Seals and gannets are also regular visitors. The Dutchmans is a great base from which to explore this stunningly beautiful area and to sample the wide range of activities on offer. The Argyll Forest, part of the simply gorgeous Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, is on the doorstep and has numerous forest tracks, marked walks, cycle ways and wonderful waterfalls to explore. Walkers should seek out the Cowal Way, a long distance walk running from Portavadie to Arrochar. A number of public gardens are located in the area such as Ardkinglas, Crarae and Benmore Botanic Gardens with its avenue of giant Redwood trees. There are 3 golf courses available locally and many opportunities for a spot of fishing. At Colintraive there is a short ferry crossing over to the picturesque Isle of Bute and a visit to the fabulous Victorian Gothic Mount Stuart House is a must. Tighnabruaich has a sailing school and a selection of small shops. Dunoon has a good centre for shopping, leisure facilities and a small cinema. Inveraray is also a great day out with the Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll and the 19th century Inveraray Jail both well worth a visit. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

The town is well-served, with supermarkets, independently owned shops, and excellent hotels and restaurants offering the finest local produce.

    The surrounding area is well-known for its fine beaches, unspoilt countryside and scenic walks, with the addition of the Kintyre Way, making this an ideal location from which to explore the Kintyre Peninsula. Lying just off the west coast of Kintyre, the Isle of Gigha offers a pleasant day trip. Within a short distance there are many quiet and sandy beaches to explore and there is easy access to the Isles of Islay, Arran and Jura. Jura is one of the wildest and most mountainous of the Inner Hebrides. Islay is great for wildlife enthusiasts, as it boasts a large RSPB reserve, a wintering population of barnacle and white-fronted geese, and a wildlife information centre. For the outdoor enthusiast, there is walking, cycling, fishing and water sports.

The  neighbours have hens who love to be fed, so you may be lucky and get a wonderful freshly laid egg or two during your stay! The wildlife locally is fantastic, you could see a variety of bird life, otters have been spotted in the area. Seals are also visitors, as are the gannets which are fabulous to watch dive for their supper. Local attractions include Castle House Museum and Gardens, the Bishop’s Glen, Dunoon Ceramics, Morag’s Fairy Glen, Dunoon’s swimming pool and leisure centre, Cowal Golf Club, tennis, bowling, and the extensive scenic promenade. Cowal (the area between Loch Long and Loch Fyne) boasts excellent opportunities for the great outdoors - particularly walking, hill walking, and cycling. The Kyles of Bute and Tighnabruaich, with the beautiful sandy beach at nearby Kilbride Bay, should not be missed! The ‘Arrochar Alps’ in northern Cowal offer some of the finest hillwalking in the Southern Highlands, and the ’Cowal Way’ (Portavadie-Arrochar) and the walks at Kilmun Arboretum and Loch Eckside are particularly recommended. The highly popular October walking festival, known as Cowalfest is now firmly established as a highlight of the year in the Cowal calendar, with all walks graded and numbered. There are also cultural and social events to accompany this event, which usually lasts about 10 days around the middle of the month - a ’must’ for walkers! Excursions on the famous paddle steamer ’Waverley’ are available direct from Dunoon pier up to 5 days each week during the season, and are highly recommended and extremely popular.     From Crinan, a walk or cycle ride along the canal towpath leads to Loch Fyne at Ardrishaig (7 miles), and Lochgilphead (7 miles) where there is a variety of shops, restaurants, a sports centre, swimming pool, and 9-hole golf course. Kilmory Woodland Park boasts an Iron Age fort, bird hide and lochside views, and Castle Riding Centre runs highly enjoyable riding courses as well as renting out bicycles and golf equipment.
    There are many places of interest to visit, including the prehistoric linear cemetery at Kilmartin Glen. Island trips to Mull, Iona and Staffa can be made from Oban (30 miles). Oban is also home to the Oban Sea Life Centre and the Oban Rare Breeds Farm Park. Sea fishing can be arranged and there is fly fishing within 3 miles.     Situated in a wonderful coastal location in Kames Bay on the east side of Bute, the lovely traditional stone cottages that form Kames Castle (refs SSBA, SSBB, SSBC, SSBD, SSBE, SSBF, SSBG and SSBH) are situated in approximately 19.5 acres of woodland and parkland and provide a superb, secluded location.
    Within the estate there is a wonderful B listed, 18th century walled garden containing a listed Victorian greenhouse with productive vines, tennis court, river running through and plentiful walks and wildlife to observe. The estate lies only yards from the shore and boasts views to the Kyles of Bute and Loch Striven, and to the Cowal Peninsula beyond. A small car ferry is only 5 minutes along the coastal road providing easy access to the Cowal Peninsula, and another way onto the mainland for those wishing to explore the highlands of Scotland.

    Kames Castle dates from the 14th century, at which time it was the seat of the Bannatyne family, whose roots can be traced back to the reign of King Alexander III of Scotland. The Bannatynes of Kames were believed to be chamberlains to the Stewart kings when Bute was part of the Royal Estates, and the title of Lord Kames was bestowed on William Bannatyne in the 19th century, before it came into the possession of the Marquess of Bute.

    The island has been named as one of National Geographics ’Top10’ global adventure trips. There are many breathtaking scenic walks, the West Island Way Walks and the Kelspoke Trail are close by and take in the glorious sea views. There is an interesting 13-hole golf course at Port Bannatyne. Kingarth has a 9-hole course, with views towards Arran, and there is a scenic 18-hole course in Rothesay, with views from Canada Hill towards Loch Striven and The Kyles of Bute. Bute is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has a pleasant mild climate. Outdoor enthusiasts have numerous opportunities to enjoy coastal and hill walking as well as cycling on the quiet roads and tracks around the island. Anglers enjoy a choice of freshwater and sea fishing on hill lochs and the Firth of Clyde. The area is notable for its sailing on the famous Kyles of Bute, which is a National Scenic Area. Tighnabruaich and Colintraive to the north, and the Crinan Canal and Tarbert to the west, are centres of lively sailing activity throughout the season. There are marinas and sheltered moorings in Rothesay and Port Bannatyne.

    A couple of miles away is the island’s main town of Rothesay, a traditional, Victorian, seaside resort which has managed to maintain its grand architecture. It still has its ancient castle, built to fend off the Vikings, and a museum. From Rothesay harbour, trips can be taken around the islands on the Waverley, the last sea-going paddle steamer ship in the world. Further along the coast is the pretty harbour town of Port Bannatyne. There are also other sites such as St Blanes Chapel and Ascog Fernery to be found.

    The island attracts many annual festivals including the Jazz Festival in May, ’T in the Port’ in June, ButeFest, for music and food in July, the Bute Highland Games in August, the Baird Festival of Flight, and in September to mark the first ’All Scottish, heavier than air, powered flight in 1910’, just a few years after the Wright brothers first flight to France. Close by is Mount Stuart House, an extravagantly decorated stately home. It is said to contain more marble than any other building in the British Isles and has become a popular location for celebrity weddings.
