Tarbert

The small village of Tarbert is wonderfully situated on Loch Fyne and is the gateway to the Kintyre Peninsula. Despite its small size, it''s something of a transport hub, with ferries departing from the village terminals.

The safe and sheltered natural harbour welcomes plenty of tourist traffic and provides a great base from which to explore Loch Fyne, Scotland''s longest and deepest sea loch stretching for 40 miles and reaching depths of 590 feet, as well as the Kintyre Peninsular and Argyll coastline.

Be sure to savour some of the fresh catch from the working fishing fleet; Loch Fyne is world famous for providing some of the finest seafood in Scotland. If you’re here in July head to the annual seafood festival to sample some of the local delicacies.

There is also a lively music festival featuring traditional and contemporary Scottish music, held every September in the local hotels and pubs.

Walkers are attracted here for the Kintyre Way, a series of short walks of between eight and 14 miles, which join up to cover almost all of the Kintyre Peninsula. The first section begins in Tarbert, heading up past the ruins of Tarbert Castle where Robert the Bruce stayed on several occasions, including the year of his death, in 1329.

Local beaches are popular. There''s Shell Beach, made from broken clam shells, and White Shore. Half an hour''s drive away is Skipness, which is regarded as one of Kintyre''s best beaches and has a castle to explore and lovely views over to Arran.
