Brechin

Brechin is a small town on the banks of the River South Esk in rural Angus and the ideal destination for a tranquil and relaxing getaway exploring the east coast of Scotland and with easy access to some beautiful and remote Scottish Countryside.

Brechin has a rich heritage and there are plenty of attractions that feature examples of medieval sculpture and architecture. Standing boldly in the centre of the ‘city’ is the Cathedral and an 11th Century round tower. The tower is a particularly special landmark as it is one of only two towers found on the Scottish mainland.

Visitors with a particular interest in Celtic history can visit the Pictavia Visitor Centre, where a range of interactive exhibits and artefacts are on display. Located in a pleasant countryside park in the grounds of Brechin Castle, Pictavia is the ideal venue for a family day out, as there is an adventure playground, nature trail and ornamental lake. The Brechin Town House Museum is located in the old courtroom and visitors can wander through the cellar cells and observe an interesting collection of artefacts that date back as far as the Bronze Age.

In summer, the Brechin Steam Locomotive comes to life, transporting passengers on a 4 mile journey that winds between Brechin and the Bridge of Dun in Angus; a great way to see the whole town and its surrounds for both adults and children.

Brechin offers plenty of outdoor pursuits; walks along the river and over the moors are a great way to see more of area and a stroll through the stunning walled gardens of Edzell Castle is a delightful experience. Both Dundee to the south and Stonehaven to the north offer days out and are easily accessible by road.

The house is only 300 yards from the local pub/restaurant, with a fine selection of food and drink on offer. It is just five miles from Kirriemuir, the gateway to the magnificent Glens, where there is a good selection of shops and cafes. Pay a visit to the childhood home of JM Barrie the creator of Peter Pan, which has been carefully restored as a museum.
