Sicily

This ancient and fascinating jewel in the Mediterranean has been attracting holidaymakers since Roman times. Enjoy its rich culture, warm climate, beautiful mountain scenery and of course magnificent beaches. For a great selection of self catering accommodation please take a look at our villas in Sicily.

Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, lies just five kilometres off the tip of southern Italy; a popular tourist spot, not just for its natural beauty, but also for its culture, traditions and rich history. It is one of Italy''s most diverse regions with a long history of foreign domination and influence. The Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spanish have all occupied the island, resulting in a mixed cultural heritage evident in its archaeological sites, architecture, tastes and sounds of modern Sicily.

If you like your summer holidays hot you won’t be disappointed here, however it’s also a great destination in the spring or autumn, when the temperatures are a bit lower, yet still beautifully warm. There some great beaches on the island and plenty of watersports are available if you want them.

Palermo, the island''s lively capital, has plenty for sightseers, including its cathedral, the symbolic crossroads at Quattro Canti in the old centre, and the Catacombe dei Cappuccini. The Aegadian Islands, located off the west coast are well worth a visit if you have time, as are the beautiful volcanic Aeolian Islands. There are Greek temples and ruins at Segesta, Selinunte and Syracuse, among others.

Agrigento, in the south of the island, is noted for the Valle dei Templi, a UNESCO World Heritage site and at Taormina in the west; there is a stunning Greco-Roman theatre which has great views of the famous Mount Etna, a spectacular 3323m high active volcano. Gela on the south coast is a seaside resort, archaeological centre and one of the most important examples of an ancient Greek city. The town of Noto, also located on the south coast, is home to some of Europe''s best examples of Baroque Architecture.

The island is not short of wild, natural places of beauty, with mountainous natural parks, marine reserves and salt-pan lagoons; great for walking and horseback riding, scuba diving and snorkling.

Sicily is renowned for its food and wine. The local cuisine is typically Mediterranean, but with strong Arabic and Spanish flavours and spices. Almond, rosemary, jasmine, basil and mint feature highly. There are also many delights awaiting those with a sweet tooth.

Choose from this exciting range of holiday villas in Sicily, and explore the beauty, culture and history of the island for yourself.
