The lakes of Lombardy are synonymous with luxury and serenity. The calm waters of Lake Como have attracted scores of celebrities and dignitaries over the years, who love the seclusion of a private lakeside villa with a pool away from prying eyes and the usual tourist destinations. Villas with swimming pools are the perfect accompaniment to lake life, offering a private place to relax and enjoy the views, and a welcome alternative to swimming in the chilly waters of the Great Outdoors.
Villas with private pools near the lakes offer the sort of peace and quiet that is impossible to find in real life, as well as stunning vistas and access to the local lakeside towns. The town of Bellagio, for instance, is a must-visit. It is known as the ‘Pearl of the Lake’ thanks to its enviable location in the middle of Lake Como, and its reputation for fine dining and high end café culture.
Around Lake Garda, villa residents can explore some of Lombardy’s most spectacular sights - Scaliger Castle and the fortified town of Sirmione are jaw-droopingly beautiful, and there are a number of sulphur springs and natural Roman spas around the southern banks of the lake.
Lake Maggiore is the smallest of the Lombardy lakes, but arguably the most picturesque. This lake shares a border with Switzerland, and from the Italian shore you can look all the way across to the snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps, which are reflected in the water on still days. Holiday villas with pools near Lake Maggiore were once favoured by the European aristocracy, and they are still high demand today thanks to the dramatic scenery and pretty countryside.
However, most visitors come to Lombardy to simply wind down in a peaceful environment and breath in the fresh mountain air. As soon as you arrive at the lakes for the first time, you will understand what all the fuss is about.
