County Wicklow

County Wicklow has all the ingredients for the most perfect outdoor holiday amongst the most stunning scenery; rugged mountains, deep valleys, heather clad moors and beautiful coastline. For our selection of self catering accommodation in this region please see cottages in County Wicklow.

Situated south of Dublin and within easy access to the capital for days out, County Wicklow is an area of outstanding natural beauty. With miles of nature trails winding their way through lush countryside, dramatic mountain ranges and along glorious coastlines, it is easy to see why this picturesque county has been given the title of Garden of Ireland.

County Wicklow has an attractive coastline, but as far as natural beauty is concerned it is the dramatic Wicklow Mountains National Park and rolling green landscapes which are the stars of the show. This delightful region includes peaceful rivers winding their way through mountains, hills and valleys and quaint hamlets scattered throughout the landscape to form some of the best walking country in Ireland. One of the most popular tourist spots here is the Vale of Avoca, where the River Avonmore and the smaller River Avonbeg converge.

The magnificent scenery which typifies Wicklow naturally makes the county the perfect destination for cyclists and walkers, with a variety of routes and trails to choose from. Attractions of the historic, man-made variety can be found at the Monastic City near the village of Glendalough. Founded in the sixth century, this ancient settlement has many surviving buildings and stone structures which paint a vivid portrait of a way of life long since vanished.

County Wicklow is home to many other historic attractions including the infamous gaol at Wicklow, first opened at the beginning of the 18th century, and Russborough House, one of the finest stately homes in the whole of Ireland.

With such fine natural scenery and fascinating historic attractions, it is sometimes easy to forget how many delightful towns and villages there are in County Wicklow too. Locations such as Wicklow Town, Blessington and Enniskerry, with its unique selection of organic gourmet cafes, are just waiting to be sampled.

Browse through our selection of holiday cottages in County Wicklow today and immerse yourself in the stunning natural beauty of the Garden of Ireland.
