Find cottages in County Wexford

Blue flag beaches, old forts, hidden coves and Hollywood film locations comprise County Wexford in the sunny southeast of Ireland. And for a great selection of self catering accommodation in the region please see our cottages in County Wexford.

Popularly referred to as the sunny southeast of Ireland due to the above average number of sunshine days each year when compared with other parts of the country, County Wexford is also a region of great beauty. The relatively mild climate, picturesque views and overall sense of tranquillity make this coastal district in the province of Leinster an enchanting holiday destination.

The Blacklion and Wicklow Mountains lie on its borders and there are miles of pristine coastline and Blue Flag beaches to enjoy. It was on the stretch of coastline north of Wexford town where Stephen Spielberg filmed the beach landing in the film ‘Saving Private Ryan’.

The Edenvale River and Forest Walk takes you on a gentle stroll by the river, through woods and past a waterfall. The striking volcanic outcrop of Carrickbyrne Hill offers five kilometres of coniferous forest trail. Along the coast there are beaches and secluded coves aplenty, dotted with timeless seaside villages. Birdwatchers will love the Wexford Wildlife Reserve, the closest point for birds migrating from the UK and the continent.

At the tip of the Hook Peninsula is the Hook Head Lighthouse, a 13th century construction built by the Earl of Pembroke, which offers magnificent views of the landscape and sea. From the balcony here, seals, dolphins and even whales can be seen. It’s also a place of hidden coves and old forts.

For some historical and cultural insight visit the 13th century Ferns Castle and Medieval Village, once the stronghold of the powerful kings of Leinster. The Irish National Heritage Park is a living museum tracing some 9,000 years of history over 35 acres where you can easily imagine stepping back into the distant past.

Johnstown Castle is a 12th century architectural gem with wonderful woodlands and gardens to wander. Nearby is the Irish Agricultural Museum. Housed in former farm buildings, this imaginatively laid out museum features such as traditional crafts, Irish country furniture and the story of the Great Famine.

The town of Wexford itself, after which the county is named, is certainly worth a visit, especially as it is the location of Ireland''s first purpose built opera house. Many kinds of shows and performances can be enjoyed here, and the behind the scenes tour is well worth taking. The local racecourse features both National Hunt and flat racing.
