Situated on the south-eastern coast, County Waterford is the perfect place for a self catering holiday in Ireland. In fact it has more hours of sunshine than any other county and offers visitors spectacular and varied scenery including mountain ranges and coastal resorts.
The region has two mountain ranges; the Comeragh Mountains which is popular with climbers and the Knockmealdown Mountains, which are home to the endangered red grouse and hen harrier; perfect for walking and wildlife spotting.
The coast is of course a major attraction for visitors and offers opportunities for water sports including surfing, as well as providing superb coastal walks. Much of the coastline is referred to as The Copper Coast (taken from the copper mines that once dotted the region) and is a UNESCO heritage site rich in geological significance.
The Vikings were the first people to recognise the area''s potential. They founded a settlement at Waterford which is believed to be Ireland''s oldest city. Follow the ‘Viking Triangle’ walk which takes in historic sites or visit the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre.
County Waterford displays it rich history and heritage through the many castles, historic buildings and beautiful gardens that be found throughout the region.
Churches and cathedrals of note include Mount Melleray Abbey at Cappoquin and Waterford Cathedral in the capital. The area around Ardmore is rich in spiritual and religious sites, including the spectacular clifftop setting of St Declan''s Well and Oratory.
Meanwhile, the beautiful scenery around Lismore provides the perfect backdrop for the eponymous Castle Gardens and Gallery. Don''t forget to take a walk around The Towers while you are at Lismore. Set amid glorious woodlands these towers and follies were supposed to form the entrance to a grand house but the project ran out of money before work could commence on the main building. To the east the coastal town of Dungarvan is in a delightful spot facing out over a picturesque bay.
