County Sligo

Ireland''s wonderful west coast has plenty to offer visitors, and County Sligo is no exception. The spectacular mountain of Ben Bulben, sometimes known as Ireland''s Table Mountain, forms an impressive backdrop to the landscape popularised in the poetry of W B Yeats. See our cottages in Sligo for accommodation.

The coastline is beautiful, with some breathtaking scenery and many tracks for walking and sightseeing. Sligo''s history can be explored by visiting the many historical sites, including the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery which is older than the pyramids as well as the abbeys, castles, houses and cottages that are open to visitors.

If you are visiting County Sligo, make sure you take one of the regular boat trips on Lough Gill to view the famous Isle of Innisfree and take in the glorious views. Lovers of the outdoors will find many sports and activities to enjoy, ranging from walking and climbing in the mountains to surfing from Mullaghmore Beach, described by The Lonely Planet as one of the world''s best places for big wave surfing. Great watersports are also available at the coastal villages of Easkey and Rosses Point.

Ireland is famous for horse racing and in addition to the meetings at Sligo Racecourse you may be lucky enough to witness some horse racing on Enniscrone beach. There are plenty of opportunities to mount a horse for yourself and golfers will find they are never far away from a golf course including the County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point which is a championship links course.

Traditional music can be heard in the many bars and pubs throughout the county, and musicians are welcome to join in. There are also various festivals throughout the year where you can enjoy the music and many events for families. The Black Pig festival in Enniscrone runs for a week in summer and in addition to live music in the pubs there are many activities including mini beach games and a duck race to enjoy. A sculpture of the black pig can be found in the town, and you will be able to explore the legend of this famous wild boar.
