The River Shannon passes through the county and presents great opportunities for families and couple alike to explore by boat or kayak. Lough Key Forest Park is located close to the Shannon and is in fact assessable by river or by car. Here there are 350 hectares of delightful parkland covered in walking and cycling trails and for some fun in the tree tops get along to Zipit.

Nearby the forest and on the lakeside of Lough Key is Boyle, a lovely lakeside resort with walks, lake cruises and fishing. To the south is the charming town of Roscommon, which seems to of been frozen in time.

The usual activities are available including great walking, mountain biking and horse-riding and there are plenty of activities to amuse the kids on a rainy day. Take an underground tour at the Arigna Mining Experience or enjoy a day out at Roscommon Leisure Zone with its bowling and children''s rides.

For relaxing days out and especially for history lovers take the opportunity to visit one or two of Roscommon''s four historic houses - Castlecoote, Clonalis, King House and Strokestown Park House which houses the Famine Museum, a thought provoking display about the Great Famine of the 1840’s.

Roscommon is famous for its home grown lamb so head for the area''s farmers markets to pick up the freshest local produce, perfect for preparing dinner back at your cottage and if you’re here in May check out the Lamb Festival!

There''s no shortage of craic to be had on your holiday and as darkness falls the traditional pubs and live music venues come to life - and don''t forget your dancing shoes!
