Find cottages in County Mayo

County Mayo has craggy mountains trails, unspoilt sandy beaches, wonderful walking and cycling routes as well as a host of traditional towns and villages to discover. To discover a fine selection of self catering accommodation, see our cottages in County Mayo.

This beautiful and inspiring region in the west of Ireland has plenty to offer visitors both on land and water. There are miles of dramatic coastline and many Blue Flag beaches, mountains and hills to climb, beautiful lakes and fast running rivers.

Explore the towns and villages including Westport, formerly voted ‘Best place to live in Ireland’ by the Irish Times, here you’ll find fine restaurants, traditional music and water sports in nearby Clew Bay or Ballina to the north situated on the river Moy; the ‘Salmon Capital of Ireland’. Anglers will enjoy fishing on the River Moy, or fly fishing at Burrishoole or Errif - both brown trout and salmon are common here.

Ireland’s largest island, Archill Island, sits just off shore and is accessible by bridge from the mainland. Here there are lovely sandy beaches and the opportunity to follow the ‘Atlantic Drive’ that takes you through some spectacular scenery.

There are plenty of opportunities for horse riding, golf and of course excellent walking - why not visit Croagh Patrick, Ireland''s ''Holy Mountain'', which offers breathtaking views from the top? Other walks suitable for the more experienced include Nephin Mountain Walk and Mweelrea Mountain Walk.

Mountain bikers should head for ‘The Great Western Greenway’, a trail of some 42km following the old Westport to Archill railway line. It’s suitable for both avid enthusiast as well as families who fancy a day out by bike.

Apart from the cycling, walking and Blue Flag beaches there lots for families to do including pet farms and the Roola Boola Children''s Art Festival, which takes place in Castlebar every October bank holiday weekend.

Look out for the farmers markets, which have been part of small town life here for the last century. Check out Achill Farmers Market every Friday or Westport Market on Thursdays - both are great places to pick up local produce to prepare a delicious meal back at your cottage!

County Mayo is the perfect destination for those looking to get back to nature and escape the stress of urban life - browse our range of holiday cottages in County Mayo today and plan your holiday in Ireland.
