County Louth

Visit Ireland''s ‘Wee’ county, County Louth, a land of legends and beauty.

County Louth sits tucked away in the north east of southern Ireland and is the smallest county in the country, hence its affectionate nick-name the ''Wee County''. Despite its small size, it actually has a huge amount going for it. As well as being beautifully scenic, it offers a wealth of attractions and is steeped in legend, myths and historical interest.

If you are interested in ancient sites, County Louth will not disappoint. It boasts a rich medieval past, with countless examples of ancient treasures, including the monastic Mellifont Abbey, the High Crosses and round tower at Monasterboice, the stones of Proleek Dolmen and the ancient site of the Battle of the Boyne, which has a visitor centre and historical re-enactments in the summer months.

The towns of Dundalk, Carlingford, Drogheda and Ardee are full of historical importance and worth a visit. County Louth is home to Ireland''s best-known, mythological tale, the Tain Bo Cuailnge (Cattle Raid of Cooley. A story of a queen and warrior).

Drogheda is one of the county''s most visited towns and was one of the largest walled towns in medieval times. Today it offers a good mix of old and new with a fine selection of shops, restaurants, and pubs. If you come in summer, then you might catch the Drogheda Samba Festival, where international Samba bands gather, bringing the town alive with music.

Carlingford has medieval streets and a good selection of historical sites, nestled among chic restaurants and upmarket boutiques. It also has a state-of-the-art adventure centre. The surrounding mountain views are stunning and if you’re here in August get along to the oyster festival.

The stunning Cooley Peninsula is one of the county''s treasures, with its heather-clad mountains, ensuring it is a favourite choice for walkers and cyclists. The coastline includes three Blue Flag beaches and golfers will be pleased to discover that there are no less than ten golf courses in the region. Carlingford Lough is a popular spot for fishing and sailing.
