County Limerick

County Limerick is bounded in the north by the banks of the River Shannon and the estuary that forms a natural barrier between Limerick and Clare. This picturesque Irish county boasts beautiful pastoral landscapes, ringed by the majestic Galtee Mountains in the west, Ireland''s highest range. It’s the art, culture, history and outdoor activities that makes it such a popular holiday destination.

The County has a rich history dating back to the Vikings and much of this history can be found in Limerick city. When visiting drop by the 13th century King John''s Castle on the banks of the Shannon River and see St John''s Cathedral which has the tallest spire in Ireland and is still in continuous use to this day. There is a wealth of history is exhibited in the traditional cottages that line the streets dating back over a hundred years.

For those with an interest in art and culture there are plenty of opportunities to gain insight into the rich heritage of the region. There are many art galleries including the renowned Limerick City Gallery of Art that house classic and contemporary works, and the Hunt Museum located in the historic Custom House features a unique selection of treasures that range from archaeological finds to more modern displays.

County Limerick also has a rich sporting heritage and the famous Thomond Park Stadium is the home to Munster Rugby Club. If you’re a sports fan and here during the season why not take in a match, there''s also an interactive museum next door that provides more information on the game and its importance in the county.

If you enjoy nature County Limerick is an absolute paradise; walking in the Broadford Arboretum, Curraghchase Forest Park, Galtee Castle Wood and much of the surrounding countryside is idyllic. Horse riding is also available and golf courses are in abundance. For those who enjoy fishing there are also opportunities to test the waters of Shannon to see what can be caught.
