County Galway

This beautiful and wild place blends perfectly with a strong artistic and cultural heritage; that epitomises County Galway. Enjoy the buzz of Galway city and the natural ruggedness of Connemara and the coast; what could be better than a cottage holiday in Galway!

On the west coast of Ireland lies County Galway, a gorgeous getaway destination that''s a firm favourite with visitors looking for relaxation. Known for its beautiful scenery in and around Galway Bay, Connemara and on the Aran Islands, this picturesque county makes a great base for exploring Ireland''s fourth largest city and the wilds beyond.

County Galway offers plenty in cultural, historical and outdoor attractions. The unique ambience of this region can be seen as local artists, artisans and even farmers open up their homes to visitors to display and sell their wares. Spend some time in the city of Galway, this lively thriving city is full of traditional pubs and in summer there''s a very lively arts scene, including the renowned Arts Festival that has made Galway the unofficial cultural centre of Ireland.

For those interested in the history Galway City Museum overlooks the famous Spanish Arch and houses exhibits that offer insight into the region''s rich history and heritage. There are also some stunning architectural buildings in the county that pay homage to Galway''s heritage, including the Church of Ireland St. Nicholas'' Collegiate Church that was founded in 1320 is the largest medieval place of worship still in everyday use in Ireland. There''s also Galway Cathedral and Dunguaire Castle which was built around 1520; both buildings are worth a visit as they have played an important role in Ireland''s history.

In the outer reaches of County Galway you’ll find spectacular scenery and an unspoilt interior filled with pristine lakes, valleys, mountains and rivers. Hikers will love the walks along the Twelve Bens peaks, and the coastline is littered with rocky inlets and small beaches that just beg to be explored.

Fishing is a popular pastime in Galway and Lough Corrib is one of the larger freshwater lakes that has become famous for its salmon fishing. For the more adventurous, a day trip out to the Aran islands, a visit to the Arigna mines or a tour of the mysterious Aillwee Cave are the perfect way to spend the day.

Our fine selection of cottages in County Galway provides the perfect accommodation from which to explore the region.
