County Clare

Towering cliffs, spectacular coastline and miles of unspoilt countryside all combine to make County Clare a wonderful location for a cottage holiday in Ireland. The outstanding natural beauty of County Clare makes this region a haven for walkers and cyclists and particularly surfers who come here in great numbers. The scenery and views here really are something special, particularly the spectacular Cliffs of Moher, where the jagged, sheer coastline is met by the pounding waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Similarly dramatic is the windswept, rocky region of The Burren, where miles of ancient limestone rock forms a national park landscape of stark and rather unique quality. Some of the wildflowers which grow in this unforgiving area are used to produce many of the subtle scents available at the Burren Perfumery and Floral Centre, a popular stop for visitors to the area.

Among the fine beauty of the wonderful natural landscape sit some of the friendliest and most charming towns and villages in Ireland. County Clare is the place to be if you enjoy traditional Irish music and you will find exponents of this wonderful art form plying their trade in all manner of venues, from tiny village pubs to large halls. Lovers of Irish music simply have to visit the villages of Doolin, regarded as the epicentre of music in the area and Kilfenora, which is home to a band that has been in existence for over a century!

For a day out on the sea catch the boat from Doolin to the Aran Islands or try a round or two of golf; Greg Norman designed the links at Doonbeg on the coast.

Although it is the largest town in the area, Ennis still exudes the warmth, friendliness and charm of smaller villages such as Ennistymon. Among Ennis'' narrow streets, you will find a plethora of shops, pubs and restaurants, and a fascinating little museum telling the story of County Clare from ancient times to the present.

In the east of the county, Clare borders the River Shannon and Lough Derg, where picturesque villages like Killaloe and Mountshannon can be found. Catch the boat on the lake from Mountshannon to visit Iniscealtra (Holy Island) for some religious reflection at the 6th century monastery.
