County Cavan

One of Ireland’s hidden gems, County Cavan has all the ingredients for a great cottage holiday; come and enjoy its many lakes and forest parks. For places to stay see our cottages in County Cavan.

County Cavan is known as the Lakeland County and has no fewer than 365 lakes; one for every day of the year. It’s naturally a paradise for those who like to take to the water on boats and fishermen. In addition the Erne and Shannon Rivers as well as the restored Shannon-Erne waterway are perfect for cruising, canoeing and kayaking. The county has renowned coarse and pike fishing and well as brown trout that can be found in the Lough Sheelin.

Its drumlin, or hilly, countryside and acres of forest parks provide alternative outdoor activities, while a visit to the Breifne mountains can make everyday life seem a world away. For yet more escapism, the county is the home of a rich musical scene and plays host to a range of festivals.

Walkers and cyclists will not be disappointed, with a mixed landscape of gently rolling drumlins and upland blanket bogs. The Marble Arch Caves Geopark has been accredited by UNESCO and the Cavan Way offers a heady mix of great scenery and mystical folklore.

Ireland''s strong equestrian tradition is very apparent and there are several equestrian centres in the region, allowing everyone to experience the scenery at a leisurely pace and from a unique viewpoint. If riding is not on the agenda, a visit to the only saddle makers'' museum in the world is a perfect substitute.

County Cavan was home to people as far back as the Neolithic or New Stone Age period. For a good dose of local history visit the 12th century Norman Clough Oughter Castle, within the Marble Arch Geopark; Kilmore''s Cathedral of St Feidhlimidh; the pre-historic landscape of Cavan Burren Park; Cohaw Megalithic Tomb; Drumlane Abbey, Church and 10-metre high Round Tower; and the early Christian fort of Moneygashel Cashel.

Shannon Pot, between Blacklion and Glangevlin, is the River Shannon''s source, but its significance goes much further. This is a place of religious and cultural importance still able to inspire as much today as it did in Celtic times.
