County Carlow

County Carlow is small, compact and beautifully put together. Visitors come here for its verdant gardens, mountains and rivers; just as nature intended and perfect for a relaxing holiday. For places to stay, see our cottages in County Carlow.

Located in the south east of Ireland and bordered by five adjacent counties, this county is ideally situated for exploring a lovely corner of the Emerald Isle. With peaceful countryside, glorious mountains, and pretty river valleys all conveniently close by, County Carlow has much to offer the visitor; cultural heritage, traditional villages and both adventurous or less adventurous actives, depending on your preference.

The green and verdant limestone landscape is enriched by the rolling hills of the Killeshins in the west and mighty Blackstairs mountains in the east; ideal country for all the usual outdoor activities. Probably the most famous geographical feature is the 5,000-year-old Browne''s Hill Dolmen. This granite formation is widely recognised as being the biggest capstone in all Europe, weighing in at an impressive 100 tonnes. These are perfect places for walking and admiring great views.

Carlow Town, on the banks of the River Barrow, is vibrant and friendly market town that serves a wide rural community. Dotted with interesting architecture, one of the most important buildings is the courthouse which was designed as homage to the Parthenon. Local folklore tells that it was supposed to be built in Cork, but due to a mix up in the plans was in fact constructed in Carlow before the mistake was noticed.

County Carlow is especially rich in historical attractions, with a veritable multitude of castles to visit, including Dolmens, Ballymoon, Ballyloughan, Clonmere and Carlow Castle which dates back to the 13th century. It’s also renowned for its gardens and has some of the best in the whole of Ireland; discover gardens large and small on the ‘Carlow Garden Trail’ including Altamont, a brilliant example of a walled garden and the Delta Sensory Garden which comprises of 16 different gardens.
