About Sherborne

If you’re interested in history, Sherborne has plenty of tales to tell.

Beautiful and ancient architecture adorns the area, revealing a rich and interesting past. The famous Sherborne Abbey is a must-see, not least for its intricate vaulted stone ceiling. Listen out for the heaviest ring of eight bells in the world.

Also worth a visit is the town museum, situated in a Grade II listed building, where you can learn about the area’s fascinating history. Sherborne Castle, one of two castles in Sherborne, is home to an impressive art collection and a brilliant display of historic interior design.

Beyond the many marvellous buildings, the picturesque market town is also associated with Hardy Country. Life in the local countryside inspired Thomas Hardy to create many classic works of literature, including Far From the Madding Crowd. The 2015 film adaptation used Sherborne scenery as an authentic filming backdrop, including the Abbey, and the town’s streets were given the Hollywood treatment to recreate the 1870s market square Hardy referred to as ‘Casterbridge’.

Providing a welcome contrast to the many coastal hotspots in Dorset, Sherborne offers a rural retreat with countryside which has remained largely unchanged since Hardy’s day. There are plenty of ways to explore the area, including the dedicated Hardy Trail and The Wessex Ridgeway Trail, with its panoramic views. For those who prefer two wheels, Sherborne is situated on a National Cycle Network route, which spans more than 40 miles and can be enjoyed equally whether ridden in full or in part.
