Arguably one of the most recognised and most irresistible regions in France, Provence has a wonderful and diverse range of the most beautiful landscapes; from Mediterranean coastline and delta plains to deep gorges, gentle rolling countryside and the snow-capped mountains of the Alps. The area became the first Roman province beyond the Alps and despite being part of France for more than 500 years, the region retains a distinct linguistic and cultural identity.

Famous for its pretty towns and villages, brilliant sunshine, wine, food, and colourful countryside, the region is perfect for walking and cycling and delightful tours by car along the relatively quiet country roads.

Mercantour National Park to the east has numerous walking trails, and the exceptional Gorges du Verdon, with its beautiful turquoise waters, is great for hiking, kayaking and rock climbing. Fishing, kayaking and rowing are available on the beautiful Lac de Saint Cassien, located just outside Montauroux. The Camargue just to the west is one of the largest wetlands and river deltas in Europe, great for birdwatching.

Stretching along the Rhone Valley places of interest include Avignon, Capital of the Catholic Church during medieval times; see the medieval walls that encircle the old city centre by the Rhone river. The small town of Orange has a spectacular Roman theatre which dominates the medieval town centre and is thought to be the world’s best preserved Roman theatre, and finally Arles which is one of France’s oldest and most lovely cities and the place where van Gough spent much of his young life painting.

It would be remiss not to mention Aix-en-Provence, packed with cafes, shops and restaurants, a pretty square with fountain and a backdrop of medieval architecture. Every week the town centre hosts some the best markets in Provence. In fact most villages and towns have a weekly market were you can purchase local produce, including olives, sausage, cheeses and breads.

On the coast Marseille, France’s second largest city, is a bustling vibrant port city that keeps a balance between the modern and the traditional. It’s alive with multicultural diversity and has characteristic steeply sloping streets, ochre coloured buildings and plenty of artisan shops.

The ’Papal City’ of Avignon, Carpentras with its Friday market, Apt and the Luberon hill villages are just to the south. This is a wonderful area for walkers and cyclists to visit with many marked trails. Bike hire is available in the village.
