Normandy

Since William the Conqueror conquered England in 1066, the Dukes of Normandy were often also Kings of England until the early 13th century. Many medieval landmarks can be found here and visitors will enjoy visiting some of the abbeys, churches, castles and palaces for which the region is renowned.

In more recent history, of course, the famous Allied D Day Invasion took place on the beaches of Normandy. Today visitors can explore the five beaches where more than 130,000 Allied Soldiers landed. The region is also home to many interesting museums and memorials to this period of World War Two and visitors can view old tanks, defences and army bunkers that played a part in the conflict.

As well as a fascinating history, Normandy''s wide beaches and 350 mile coastline make an ideal playground for families, with quiet meandering country lanes and rural farmland further inland to explore. There are picturesque villages to visit as well as famous sites such as Bayeux with its famous tapestry and Monet''s home at Giverny where he was inspired to paint the famous water lilies as well as other views of his beautiful garden. The cathedrals of Coutances, Caen and Rouen and the wonderful abbey of Mont St Michel are also well worth visiting.

Normandy is famous for dairy farming and produces excellent butter, cream and milk as well as superb cheeses such as Pont l''Eveque, Livarot and Camembert. There are many excellent restaurants, and visitors can enjoy local dishes and haute cuisine in towns and small villages all over the region. Apples are another delicacy for which Normandy is well known.
