It’s beautiful and uncrowded, stretching from the magnificent Pyrenees to Europe’s largest river delta teeming with wildlife. With stunning scenery and miles of peaceful coastline, the Languedoc-Roussillon region of France is the perfect location for a peaceful, picturesque break away from it all. With numerous quiet coastal towns and points of interest, you can experience the pleasant, laid-back side of France at your leisure.

With the Mediterranean Sea bringing warm breezes throughout the year the area is perfect for walkers or cyclists and the district is famed for its areas of natural beauty, such as the renowned delta region of the Camargue, and numerous sites of historical interest. There are miles of coastal paths and nature walks and towns such as Argeles-sur-Mer and Sete have great places to shop, eat and drink, while being incredibly close to wonderful countryside and unspoiled beaches.

Some of the towns and villages in this region are amongst the most beautiful in France. The largest and busiest city in the region is Montpellier, a thriving metropolitan city with plenty to offer, the old part of the city is filled with ancient architecture from its medieval period.

Much of the region is like this, with numerous old castles, forts and monuments along the coastline. History enthusiasts should visit Nimes to see the impressive Roman ruins which include an ancient sports arena. The town of Gard also has a sight well worth seeing, a three-story Roman aqueduct known as Le Pont du Gard, which is a world heritage site.

Other places of interest include Narbonne with its indoor market and canal and Perpignan which has a strong Catalan influence. Also the towns of Uzes, Pezenas and Sommieres are all well worth visiting.

A visit to the Languedoc-Roussillon region would not be complete without sampling the various wines produced in the area. You will also find an abundance of fresh fish and seafood on offer throughout the region, with the local cuisine combining traditional French fare with strong Mediterranean influences.
