Ile-de-France and Paris

It''s the perfect destination for a self-catering family break or romantic weekend for two; and we have a great selection of gites in Ile-de-France to choose from.

The Ile-de-France is the wealthiest region in France, often referred to as the ''Region Parisienne'' (Paris Region). While the metropolitan area of Paris takes up much of the region, there is also plenty of beautiful countryside waiting to be explored and with the Ile-de-France so accessible by air, car or Eurostar.

Whether you are looking to be close to the sights of Paris or want to explore the rural towns and villages of the region, no trip to the Ile-de-France would be complete without visiting the Palace of Versailles, south west of Paris. Probably the world''s most luxurious palace, built for Louis XIV, it''s a sight to behold - don''t miss the Hall of Mirrors and a wander around the surrounding park.

The chateau at Fontainbleau is set within a forest of pine and oak, in the loop of the Seine. It was built in the 15th century by Philip the Good and was the place where Napoleon Bonaparte announced his abdication; he later described it as ‘the true home of kings, the house of ages’.

Art lovers should head north of Paris to Auvers-sur-Oise, where Vincent Van Gogh spend the last three months of his life; it''s a great opportunity to see where he painted. A day trip to Monet''s house and gardens at Giverny is also a must - see Monet''s lily pond in the grounds of his home then head to the Musee des Impressionismes.

Of course Paris itself has plenty to delight visitors. Whether your idea of heaven is exploring the collections of the Louvre and the Musee D''Orsay, heading below ground to investigate the Paris Catacombs, dining at the Jules Verne restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower or cruising down the Seine on a Bateaux Mouches, you''ll fall in love with Paris. On Sundays, the city''s streets are filled with rollerbladers who enjoy an afternoon skating around the city.

Sit in a pavement cafe and watch the world go by over a croque monsieur or head for the city''s fromageries and boulangeries to gather essentials for a romantic meal à deux back at your cottage. Staying in a holiday cottage gives you the freedom to explore the whole region at your pleasure, whether you''re into history, art or maybe even shopping.

It''s hardly surprising the Ile-de-France is one of the country''s most popular regions. Check out our range of cottages in Ile-de-France today and come see for yourself.
