The Dordogne is located in south west France inland from the Gironde estuary and has long been a prized holiday destination for British holiday makers. They come here for its slow, relaxed pace of life, pretty country towns and old villages, ancient castles and utterly beautiful and varied rural scenery. The Dordogne is home to a number of fortified medieval towns. Perched on rocky outcrops, the ‘bastide’ towns (Of medieval origin) of Rocamadour, Domme and Monpazier give stunning glimpses into the history of the region and are perfect for exploring. The regional capital Sarlat has a wealth of tradition and history faithfully restored to its 17th century magnificence. Wander around its twice weekly market where you will find an array of local produce.

The region is known for its hundreds of prehistoric attractions including cave paintings, spectacular rock formations and underground rivers. Visit Les Eyzies and Lascaux II where you can see magnificent cave paintings and view the artefacts dating back 400,000 years.

Take a boat trip on a flat bottomed gabarre to explore pretty riverside villages, or if you fancy something more adventurous, you can hire a kayak at the pretty town of Brantôme and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the river Dronne at your own pace.

The department of Lot with its limestone countryside is a lovely slice of rural France; its capital, the small city of Cahors, has charming medieval streets and a unique 14th century bridge, the Pont de Valentre.

Enjoy the tranquil French countryside by car, foot or bike. Here there are miles of quiet country roads, walking trails and cycling paths. Visit the town markets or hire a canoe for a leisurely day on the river. Horse riding is also a popular past time in the Dordogne.

The Dordogne, like much of France, is a food lover’s delight which you can find at the region’s many local markets. From rich confit de canard to more adventurous escargots, it’s a feast for all the senses. Don’t leave the Dordogne without sampling truffles and clafoutis, a traditional baked desert of plums and cherries. All these are perfectly complimented by the region’s many fine wines. Enjoy a red Bergerac or a Montbazillac sweet wine which makes a perfect accompaniment for deserts.

    The Dordogne has its fair share of renovated farmhouses but few have the level of comfort, space and the ambience of this one. It is natural that most visitors enjoy spending their holiday outdoors, but if required, the inside of the house has all the equipment and facilities to ’weather the occasional storm’. It has all the features you might expect of a former farmhouse, stone walls, oak beams and a large feature fireplace. The outside area is equally impressive, a large paved terrace area partly covered with vines has more than adequate garden furniture, overlooks the private swimming pool and mature gardens, and has lovely views across the adjoining countryside and farmland.     This holiday village is just a short walk from the centre of the medieval riverside market town of Montignac. Guests at these terraced holiday properties (refs W15070, W15071, and W15072) have use of the shared indoor heated swimming pool (15m x 6m, depth 1.5m) with Jacuzzi and a fitness suite. Montignac is famous for the Grottes des Lascaux. An international festival of music and dance is held in the town at the end of July. Night markets are held weekly on Mondays throughout July and August. Here you can enjoy one of the many dishes of local food and bottles of wine that are made by local producers. An outdoor market is held every Wednesday beside the church and offers a wide selection of produce, household items and clothing. There are three boulangeries and a small supermarket, post office, banks, boutiques, riverside restaurants, cycle hire and canoe hire in the town centre. Within a short drive is a very big supermarket, chemist and wine store. Visit Sarlat with its twice weekly market.
