Trémolat with its spectacular vantage point overlooking the Dordogne is 34km, from where you can continue towards Beynac, 50km, and its château perched high above the river. The fascinating medieval town of Sarlat is 1 hour’s drive.

Nearby are Saint Cyprien and its Sunday market (26km), Beynac with its châteaux, restaurants and canoe hire, Gabarre (35km), Castelnaud (30km) and Sarlat (47km) with its Saturday market, music shows, shops, restaurants and breathtaking architecture. Or if the Vézère Valley appeals to you, then Les Eyzies (37km) is the place to see with its cave paintings by the first modern human beings, and National Pre-history Museum. The upper section of the large grounds has a securely enclosed pasture that contains two resident goats and six chickens (eggs are offered to guests), and the discreet house-keeper visits daily to feed and water them and cut the lawns when needed. Visit some lovely little bastide towns such as Monflanquin, with small shops, cafés and restaurants, or the better known Monpazier with its arcaded square, both within 30 minutes’ drive. It is 30km to the Dordogne Valley for many interesting châteaux - Biron and Bonaguil are fascinating and Beynac has a stunning location overlooking the river. There is a high wire forest adventure course called Parc-en-Ciel, a 20 minute drive. The River Lot and its gorges lies to the south. Cahors, 50km, and Puy-l’Evêque, 30km, are both well worth a visit.
