Find cottages in Champagne

It may be stating the obvious but this is a region of world-famous vineyards that have drawn visitors from across the globe for years. They come here to visit the wine estates and sample one of France’s best exports. But the Champagne region of France also has magnificent ancient and medieval towns and areas of wonderful countryside. See our gites in Champagne for self catering accommodation.

The Romans called it ''Campania'' (the Land of Plains) and Champagne, to the east of Paris, is still a rural, agricultural area and of course renowned worldwide for its sparkling wines. But there''s far more to the region than just a lovely glass of fizz. The area is great for cyclists and walkers and its rural roads and quiet trails are the perfect place to enjoy a family cottage holiday or self-catering break for two.

And not to be forgotten is the Ardennes region on the Belgium border in the north of the region which has a wonderful wild landscape with plenty of walking, cycling and boating opportunities. The main town here is Charleville-Mezieres which has a beautiful 17th century palace.

Head for the busy town of Epernay and stroll down the Avenue de Champagne; the turreted Champagne mansions and pavilion-style structures line the boulevard and is definitely one of the premier wine tasting tour routes.

Taittinger''s headquarters in Reims is a great place to start your Champaign trail, or you could head for the quiet village of Hautvilliers. It''s here the monk Dom Perignon was born. Moet and Chandon''s base is in Epernay.

The medieval city of Reims is well worth visiting, and Notre Dame de Reims Cathedral is one of the finest in the region, dating back to the 13th century. 100 km to the south is the pretty town of Troyes, which dates back to the 16th century and is filled with half-timbered houses, elegant public buildings and plenty of well-preserved history.

The small town of Langres, known as the ''Carcassonne of the north'' is home to ancient buildings that date back to the 13th century, but unlike Carcassonne, you won''t find as many tourists here.

Enjoy the great outdoors at Lac du Der, Europe''s largest reservoir, which attracts birdwatchers from far and wide or spoil the children with a trip to Nigloland, one of France''s biggest theme parks.

The region has plenty for couples, families and those looking for a quieter pace of life, so take a look at our holiday cottages in Champagne today.
