Burgundy

Famous for its rich history, vineyards, churches and cuisine beautiful Burgundy is situated southeast of Paris in east-central France. If you fancy a break in this lovely part of France take a look at our fine selection of gites in Burgundy.

Split into four ‘departements’, the region has a contrasting landscape of rolling hills and more mountainous areas. Dijon is the capital of the region, known for its historic city centre, narrow streets, palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and a magnificent gothic cathedral. Other places of interest include, amongst others, the small hill city of Autun, Auxerre in the north Burgundy vineyards, the old walled town of Avallon, Beaune for its vineyard estates and chateaus, and The Morvan regional natural park; popular with walkers and nature-lovers.

The region is probably most famous for its vineyards, but Burgundy also has a rich architectural history and famous cuisine. Forests and lakes contribute to the region''s considerable beauty, typified by vineyard covered undulating hillsides.

There are numerous opportunities for fishing, riding, walking and cycling here and there is a vast area of wild countryside within the Nievre in the west of the region, which is suitable for cultural activities and sport.

Wine is undeniably the region''s best known produce, and Burgundy''s has some of the world''s most prestigious vineyards. Among the wines produced here are Pouilly-sur-Loire, Chablis, Coteaux de l''Auxerrois, Cote-de-Beaune, Cote-de-Nuits, Cotes Chalonnaises and Maconnais. Burgundies are often produced in small quantities, and this, together with an excellent reputation, leads to considerable demand and high prices.

Food and drink is a popular theme in France and Burgundy is no exception; outdoor dining is popular on the narrow cobbled streets of many of the region''s medieval towns and villages. Dishes for which Burgundy is famous include beef bourguignon, coq au vin and Epoisses de Bourgogne cheese.

Vazelay has a fabulous gothic cathedral. The medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois, located on the banks of the Armancon in the heart of the Cote-d''Or, Semur-en-Auxois and Cluny, are among the other historic towns worth a visit. There are many churches, castles, and towers in the area. Other cultural sites in the region include Vezelay Abbey, which together with the hill on which it sits, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, l''Arboretum de Pezanin and La Roche (the rock) de Solutre.

    Synonymous with the great white wine names of France, Chablis is considered by purists to be the only wine good enough to drink with oysters! Occuping a circle roughly 20 km in diameter, these vineyards encircle the small town of Chablis, which, naturally, is full of ’caves’ for ’dégustation’. The area offers many pleasant drives or bike rides, and the pretty villages southwards along the River Serein are well worth exploring. The fine Renaissance château at Tanlay is just to the east, and easily accessible for day trips are Vézelay with its Basilica, and the Cistercian abbey at Fontenay. This charming, family home, built in the early 19th century, has all the advantages of ’town’ just five minutes’ walk away, yet it is set behind a gravelled courtyard, with a large lawned garden at the rear.
