Find cottages in Auvergne

The Auvergne region is a place of mountains and valleys, a beautifully unspoilt rural area of France, perfect for outdoor holidays, walking and exploring. It’s dotted with ancient towns and villages and full of rich historic and cultural interest.

Located in central south east France, with its capital city being Clermont-Ferrand, it’s known as one of the most picturesque French regions. Auvergne is home to an abundance of striking mountains, valleys and large areas of sparsely inhabited uplands. It''s renowned for its utterly beautiful scenery and quaint old towns filled with buildings that boast a rich cultural heritage.

This rugged region offers easy access to many of the smaller towns and villages that are dotted across the hills, and the Haut Allier Valley, which is one of the highest in the region, is a listed History and Art area. During the summer months visitors can enjoy a wonderful musical programme here, and the magnificent natural beauty makes it an exceptionally popular destination with those who enjoy the great outdoors.

Auvergne’s historical chateaux route offers tours of beautiful castles such as the Chateau de Murol. For those who love history the numerous Romanesque churches, many of which date back to before 1,000 AD, will offer a fascinating insight into the past and those who appreciate exquisite architecture can admire buildings such as the Basilique Notre-Dame d''Orcival, Basilique Saint Julien de Brioude and Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l''Assomption. For a slightly alternative look at history there''s also the Electrodome, a local museum that focuses on Frances first electrified village in a quirky yet informative way.

The region is also home to the European Volcanic Park, the largest volcanic region in the whole of Europe, so those who enjoy the great outdoors can walk one of the many trails through this natural wonderland. There are also beautiful gardens and forest areas that can be enjoyed, and Jardin Lecoq and Les Gorges de la Jordanne offer a spectacular way to spend the day surrounded by nature.

The region is renowned for its cheese and many of the small villages have been producing exquisite cheeses for centuries. A traditional French meal is the perfect way to round off a day spent exploring fortified castles in the region and there are also many quaint restaurants that offer local fare.

With so much to offer it''s not surprising that Auvergne holiday cottages are so popular with those looking to explore this beautiful, rural region at their leisure. Browse our selection of holiday accommodation and book yourself a memorable getaway.
