Aquitaine

Aquitaine is located in the south west of France and has 250 kilometres of ocean coastline, protected nature reserves, wonderful walking and cycling routes as well as access to the renowned Pyrenees National Park. One of that country''s best kept secrets, nestled on the Atlantic coast and separated from Spain by the Pyrenees, it is a timeless land, where life goes on at its own laid back pace.

This medieval kingdom boasts an rich historical heritage and is dotted with magnificent chateaux. There are 250 kilometres of ocean coastline with wide sandy beaches caressed by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, which also brings the gift of an exceptionally mild climate offering an average of 2,200 hours of sunshine every year.

Lovers of nature will find much to love in Aquitaine; the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park is one of the most heavily forested areas in Europe. Amidst the pines are miles of rambling and cycling trails. The Pyrenees Atlantique region is a rugged land of breathtaking loveliness. To the north the Dordogne is a place of tiny villages, fields of sunflowers, oak woods and quaint country markets.

This is great cycling and walking country; with cycling tracks and quiet country roads. There are some 2,000 kilometres of protected and well maintained cycling routes as well as sign-posted walking trails.

Those seeking history, art and culture will also find a world of interest in Aquitaine. The medieval fortress chateau at Bonaguil is one of the finest and best preserved in France. Bayonne Cathedral is a medieval masterpiece. Sarlat is an amazing historic town with well-preserved medieval and Renaissance era buildings and a 16th century troglodyte cliff house. The national museum of prehistory at Les Eyzies holds fascinating collections pertaining to the earliest human settlements in Europe. Bordeaux, the regional capital has the world''s largest urban Unesco World Heritage site as its ancient centre and one of the finest surviving 18th century theatres in Europe.

For those who prefer sun, sand and sea, Aquitaine has a fabulous beach culture, with picturesque harbours and seaside resorts. The Silver Coast is popular with surfers, and there are ample opportunities for snorkelling, windsurfing, fishing and boat charter for a scenic coastal cruise.

Wine lovers find much to cherish here. Not to be missed by those with a passion for the grape are the chateaux of the St. Emilion, Bordeaux and Medoc vineyards. Here can be found the 123,000 hectares of the largest fine wine producing region in the world.
