Fairy-tale houses, rich history, magnificent mountains and picturesque villages make up France’s ‘beautiful garden’, where two cultures meet offering an enticing mixture of architecture, cuisine and language. For accommodation in this unique region of France see our selection of gites in Alsace.

It was Louis XIV who described Alsace as a ‘beautiful garden’ and not much has changed since. In the north-east of the country, bordering Germany, it is home to medieval villages and castles that are dotted in and around larger cities and towns such as Strasbourg and Colmar. With beautiful scenery all around and warm summer temperatures, the Alsace region is perfect for a great cultural and culinary experience.

The largest and busiest city in the area is Strasbourg; home to the European Parliament and the European Court of Human Rights as well as the stunning and world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral. A busy cosmopolitan city, Strasbourg also has a beautiful Old Quarter made up of impressive timber buildings with much of the original ancient city layout still intact.

The old city of Mulhouse will open more doors to the past with a number of museums, including one of the best vintage car collections in the world. The beautiful rural town of Colmar displays century’s old architecture including the renowned Issenheim Altarpiece and a lovely canal district.

There are lots of waterways in the Alsace region so renting a boat is a good way to make the most of the wonderful countryside, taking in the many tiny villages and ancient castles along the way. Keen golfers will also have plenty of choice as there are a number of great courses in the area and much of the impressive countryside is protected national parkland, popular with cyclists and walkers.

The Alsace region offers a great range of holiday options. Those looking to explore the history and arts of France will fall in love with the architecture which has strong Germanic influences and the many museums. Outdoor enthusiasts have a wealth of beautiful countryside to explore and those simply looking to just relax and unwind can have a peaceful break in one of the most laid back and picturesque regions in France.

Alsace is compact but beautifully formed being only 190km long and 50km wide, comprising of two departements; Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) and Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine), making it easy to explore. For self catering accommodation please see our selection of Alsace holiday cottages.
