Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. With that in mind we’re going to make a few suggestions for some of our favourite English locations and activities.

Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. There are many places to visit nearby, including the popular golden stretch of sandy beach at West Wittering, less than a 10-minute drive, or Chichester in the opposite direction, with its ornate cathedral, Festival Theatre, leisure facilities and racecourses at Goodwood and Fontwell.     For further sightseeing opportunities, the nearby train station offers services to London, which can be reached in approximately 1½ hours. Slightly further afield are Petworth House, Parham House, Goodwood House, Arundel Castle, West Dean Gardens, Uppark House, Denmans Garden and Stansted Park. Marwell Zoo with Peppa Pig World makes for a fantastic family day out, as well as the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, ‘Explosion’ Museum of Naval Firepower, HMS Rose and HMS Victory at Southampton and Portsmouth, both renowned for their large shopping outlets and plenty of entertainment.     Enjoying delightful countryside and a peaceful village setting close to the east coast, this charming cottage has been converted, along with two other holiday homes, from former stables and a hayloft. Puffin Cottage sleeps 2 guests in a large kingsize bedroom which adjoins the en-suite shower room. It has exposed oak beams and an attractive exposed chalk stone wall.

    A warm welcome awaits as you drive into what was the old farmyard. The cottage, along with The Barn and Guillemot Cottage, encompass the square, each with its own patio; a real sun trap and sheltered from the weather.

    The cottage is a great base for visiting the east coast, Dalby Forest, the North York Moors National Park, the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds made famous by the David Hockney paintings and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

    The seaside resorts of Scarborough, Bridlington and Filey are just a short drive away with large, open sandy beaches, caves and coves, or for those of you who prefer a quieter resort, Flamborough Head is close by with stunning walks along the clifftops from North to South Landing.

    Visit the stately homes and beautiful gardens of Burton Agnes, Castle Howard and Sledmere House, and a children’s zoo and land train at Sewerby Hall. The bustling market towns of Malton, Pickering and Beverley, renowned for its minster and racecourse, are all worth a visit.

    The historic city of York is just an hour away with its wide variety of museums including the Railway Museum, Castle Museum and the Jorvik Viking centre. York is very picturesque with cobbled streets surrounding the magnificent minster, along with river boat trips, street entertainers and an abundance of restaurants and real ale inns.
