Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. With that in mind we’re going to make a few suggestions for some of our favourite English locations and activities.

Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. In fact, you only have to look at the effect it’s had over some of the country’s most influential poets and artists to gauge its beauty!

Alternatively, the south of England isn’t short of beauty either. Whether its Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline or the sleepy charms of the Cotswolds, you won’t be short of beautiful views and unrivalled tranquillity. Then again, if you like it loud and lively you’ll find some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hotspots to explore and enjoy. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. Further inland you have a variety of beautiful wide-open expanses to enjoy, with or without your four-legged friends. From the rolling limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales to the flats of Somerset, there are walks and to suit all ages and abilities.     At the entrance of Greenwood Grange is Thorncombe Wood - a wildlife sanctuary from which a nature trail leads through magnificent chestnuts, beeches and oaks, and through 70 acres of black heath, furze, birch, holly, heather and rhododendrons. This is just one of many walks directly from the door over some of the most beautiful countryside in Dorset, perfect for healthy walks for dog lovers and all the family.
    Those interested in the literary landscape can explore the locations of Hardy’s famous novels. Steeped in history, Greenwood Grange was built by Thomas Hardy’s father, whilst a short distance away is the thatched cottage where Hardy himself was born, built by his great-grandfather and little altered. At Lower Bockhampton, Hardy went to school and there is a lovely walk from there to the next village, Stinsford, where his heart is buried.
    All around is a wealth of glorious National Trust countryside, pretty towns and villages as well as the beautiful coastline just 6 miles away. Excellent local village restaurants and pubs can be recommended. Kingston Maurward College with animal park, gardens, conference, function and education centre is within walking distance.
    Dorchester (Roman Durnovaria and Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’) is a pleasant walk away (2 miles) and a most attractive country town, with museums of the dinosaur and the military, swimming pool, golf (good golf can also be found at Weymouth and Charminster) and has plenty of good shops, restaurants and pubs. Also of interest is Prince Charles’s development at Poundbury, near Dorchester.
    Weymouth is 8 miles with its Georgian seafront beach - ideal for castle building! It is overlooked by an elegant 3-mile level esplanade; there is swimming from the beach, and there are lots of traditional entertainments. Two nearby RSPB reserves are at Lodmoor and Radipole which has nature trails from which grebes, swans and warblers may be seen.
    The beach at Ringstead Bay (6 miles) is known for its geology, fossils and the vegetation and wildlife of its undercliff; nearby can be seen the outlines of a village abandoned in the Middle Ages.
    The Dorset World Heritage Coastal Path offers magnificent views and surprising sights, such as the natural arch of Durdle Door, and the almost circular cove of Lulworth, about 7 miles away.
    Further west dotted along the coastline towards West Bay and the market town of Bridport are the ‘chocolate box’ villages of Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury (famous for its swannery and gardens).
    The area offers abundant river stretches for coarse or trout fishing, and sea angling from the coast.
    Gardens flourish in the mild climate, and there are many to choose from: Mapperton Gardens, Kingston Lacey, Knowle Gardens, Compton Acres, Forde Abbey Gardens and the subtropical gardens at Abbotsbury are well worth an excursion. Shop 2 miles.

    Set in the unspoilt village of Bothenhampton about a mile from Bridport and the new harbour of West Bay, where the TV series "Broadchurch" was filmed, and its beaches. The historic rope-making town of Bridport with its twice weekly market is a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, England’s only natural World Heritage Site. For the past few years holidaymakers in Sweet Briar (ref 8234) and Buzzards (ref 8235) have been able to watch a family of deer grazing in the adjacent fields and during the summer months, bats put on an amazing aerial display. Perfect for relaxing or more invigorating walking holiday in this AONB, which includes extensive NT land. Chesil Beach, one of the finest barrier beaches, begins at West Bay. Lyme Regis with its Cobb and the famous fossil beach at Charmouth are close by. Not far away is the ancient town of Dorchester with its Iron Age hill fort and Roman town house and many other sites of historic interest. Spend a day at Abbotsbury Swannery, the only place in the world where you can walk among the baby swans (hatching from May). Golf course and leisure centre nearby. Bike hire available locally. This is an ideal base from which to explore the region’s attractions, including the magnificent stately homes; the beautiful Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are an absolute must see. Visit the picturesque villages of Bakewell and Ashover, Cardale in TV’s ‘Peak Practice’, both close by. Excellent walking can be found from the doorstep, plus activities at Carsington Water, including sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and cycling, plus excellent birdwatching in the surrounding areas.
