Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer.     These eight individual holiday cottages (refs HTTW, HTTX, HTTY, HTTZ, KAAA, KAAB, KAAC and KAAD) have been lovingly converted and sit around a pretty courtyard beside the owners’ home, Downe House, a listed farmhouse dating back to the 15th century in the midst of rolling farmland that slopes gently to the coast. All the properties are spacious, have en-suite bathrooms and many have sea views north to Lundy Island and west over the Atlantic. Guests are free to use the 7 acres of land, including a 2-acre meadow and play area which is ideal for children to let off steam. Guests may use the gym facilities and spa facilities free of charge. The gym is equipped with Life Fitness equipment and is accessible all day. The spa consists of a spa bath (with seats for 8 adults), a steam room (with seats for 7 adults), and a sauna, and is available to guests from 6pm-9pm each evening. There is also a reading room on site which is available for guests. A towelling robe is provided free of charge for each adult.
    The perfect setting for walking holidays, cycling holidays, romantic or family breaks, this relaxing holiday retreat is just 1 mile from the South West Coastal Path, as well as many sandy beaches and hidden coves. To the south west lies Hartland Abbey and to the north west lies Blegberry, a fortified farm dating from the 1600s. In the distance, the stone tower of St Nectan’s Church rises above the picturesque village of Stoke.
    The sea, Berry Cove and the South West Coastal Path are a mile’s walk away along a quiet, single-track road and a small footpath. The unspoilt village of Hartland is a mile away, either by road or by footpaths that take you along the side of a small river through the picturesque vale. The historic village of Clovelly is six miles away.
    This is a perfect spot at any time of year, with fishing, golf, horse riding, surfing, sailing and walking all available in this stunning area. RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Docton Mill and Hartland Quay are well worth a visit, along with many pretty fishing villages to explore, including nearby Instow and Appledore.     National Trust Property

    A most beautiful National Trust estate, set on the banks of the River Tamar, Cotehele was the ancestral home to the Edgcumbe family for centuries. This magnificent Tudor house, perched high above the River Tamar, is decorated with tapestries, arms and armour, pewter, brass and old oak furniture. In the gardens and grounds of Cotehele, you can easily lose yourself exploring this most tranquil and beautiful location. Admire the stunning, formally planted terraces of gorgeous, colourful plants, or wander down to the Valley Garden, which includes a medieval stewpond and dovecote, which in turn leads down to the River Tamar. Sit a while and seek tranquillity in the beautiful Upper Garden and explore the orchards planted with local varieties of apples and cherry trees.

    From early spring, bright flowers adorn the grounds and the colourful herbaceous borders are simply stunning in high season. With orchards bearing fruit in the autumn and dainty snowdrops peeking through in winter, there will be horticultural activity all year round. This very popular National Trust property appeals to people of all ages, but Cotehele will be available to guests in early mornings and after the day visitors have gone home.

    In the 19th century, local industries boomed and Cotehele Quay bustled with vessels loading and unloading cargo. Paddle steamers came upriver to see the Tamar Valley’s famous blossoming orchards, and small boats carried market-gardening produce back down the river for sale at Devonport Market. The restored sailing barge Shamrock is moored at the quay and a proper Cornish cream tea can be enjoyed in the Edgcumbe tea room. The Discovery Centre here tells the story of the Tamar Valley, offering a gateway to the wider estate and is just a short walk through the Morden Valley to the sister property Cotehele Mill. Cotehele welcome dogs and there are some great walks on the miles of paths around the estate, at the quay and in the mill grounds. Dogs are also welcome in the outside seating area of the restaurants. Assistance dogs only are welcome in the house and garden.
    The enchanting hamlet of Botherick is on the southern edge of the Cotehele Estate. It grew up in the 19th century, probably to house miners working in the nearby silver-lead mines and the men working in the limekilns and on the quays beside the river below. Tremletts 4 is the end cottage in the row, with lovely views over open countryside. On a clear day, you can see all the way down the Tamar Valley to the two bridges at Saltash. With its own private garden, Tremletts 4 makes a relaxing and secluded base for exploring the lovely Cotehele Estate and the wider valley. Beach 16 miles. Shop 4½ miles, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.
