Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. With that in mind we’re going to make a few suggestions for some of our favourite English locations and activities.

Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. In fact, you only have to look at the effect it’s had over some of the country’s most influential poets and artists to gauge its beauty!

Alternatively, the south of England isn’t short of beauty either. Whether its Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline or the sleepy charms of the Cotswolds, you won’t be short of beautiful views and unrivalled tranquillity. Then again, if you like it loud and lively you’ll find some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hotspots to explore and enjoy. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. Further inland you have a variety of beautiful wide-open expanses to enjoy, with or without your four-legged friends. From the rolling limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales to the flats of Somerset, there are walks and to suit all ages and abilities. It has lots of original character, and is situated on a small working beef farm, only a 5-minute drive from Boscastle, which can also be reached on foot by taking the scenic path down the famous Valency Valley. The beamed ceiling and exposed stone walls are a feature of the open-plan living room, kitchen and dining room. The spectacular coastal path and rolling countryside is on your doorstep, as is Highcliff, the highest cliff in Cornwall, and the surfing sandy beaches of the North Cornish Coast. Often used as a television or film location, Boscastle provides some of the most dramatic rugged coastline in Europe. Take a boat trip out around Puffin Island, or even try your hand at catching mackerel for your supper! In the village itself, you can browse the antique and gift shops, the craft centre, the Witch’s Museum, or eat out in one of the restaurants or three pubs. Much of the harbour, coastline and the Valency Valley are managed by the National Trust, and are designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This cottage is perfectly positioned for walking along the South West Coastal Path and visiting the picturesque villages of the area, including Tintagel and its castle ruins. There are plenty of sandy beaches nearby, where you can get surfing and kayaking tuition. Alternatively, try hiking across Bodmin Moor, cycling the Camel Trail, horse riding, golf, rock climbing or sailing. This is an ideal base from which to explore the whole of Cornwall, Dartmoor and North Devon. Attractions to visit include The Eden Project, Lanhydrock House, St Ives with the Tate Gallery and numerous Cornish gardens. At any time of the year this is an ideal place for a holiday. In springtime you can enjoy the snowdrops, primroses and bluebells in the woodlands and hedgerows; in the summer, surf or laze on the beach and during the winter marvel at the magnificent sight of the Atlantic waves breaking whilst enjoying an invigorating walk before a drink or meal in front of the log fire, in one of the friendly local inns. Polperro has all that you imagine of a quaint fishing village, and this holiday cottage sits within the narrow winding streets that are home to fishermen’s pubs, galleries, bakeries, cafés, restaurants and shops selling locally caught seafood and local crafts. This house provides the ideal base for that special Cornish holiday. The historic fishing port of Looe is also close by and can be reached along the dramatic coastal path. Why not visit the local renowned fish market, which sells fresh fish straight off the boats in the harbour, for that special evening meal? The sheltered bays of Talland and Lantic all offer excellent swimming and bathing against the backdrop of the dramatic Cornish coastline. The scenic Cornish Coastal Path can be accessed nearby, leading visitors through stunning scenery, much of which is National Trust land. The famous seafaring town of Fowey, once the home of Daphne Du Maurier, can also be reached by catching the regular ferry across the Fowey River. The abundance of vineyards, orchards and gardens in the regional are a tribute to the mild climate, with the spectacular Eden Project and Lost Gardens of Heligan within half an hour’s drive. Equidistant is the ancient fishing village of Mevagissey, its double harbour a colourful array of traditional vessels and pleasure craft. For those who can bear to tear themselves away from the coast, there are many wonderful attractions further inland, such as Bodmin Moor and the slate caverns near St Neot. Plymouth is 25 miles away.
