Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks.     Set in the unspoilt village of Bothenhampton about a mile from Bridport and the new harbour of West Bay, where the TV series "Broadchurch" was filmed, and its beaches. The historic rope-making town of Bridport with its twice weekly market is a gateway town to the Jurassic Coast, England’s only natural World Heritage Site. Sweet Briar (ref 8234) and Buzzards (ref 8235, first floor) are in the east wing of an old country house and Farthings (ref 19292) is in the west. The holiday properties have views over the fields and woodland of the Dorset Downs. Many badgers have made their sets in the hill behind, and there is an abundance of wildlife. For the past few years holidaymakers in Sweet Briar (ref 8234) and Buzzards (ref 8235) have been able to watch a family of deer grazing in the adjacent fields and during the summer months, bats put on an amazing aerial display. Perfect for relaxing or more invigorating walking holiday in this AONB, which includes extensive NT land. Chesil Beach, one of the finest barrier beaches, begins at West Bay. Lyme Regis with its Cobb and the famous fossil beach at Charmouth are close by. Not far away is the ancient town of Dorchester with its Iron Age hill fort and Roman town house and many other sites of historic interest. Spend a day at Abbotsbury Swannery, the only place in the world where during April and May, guests can walk alongside the baby swans. Golf course and leisure centre nearby. The South Hams boasts the mildest climate in Britain. Paignton, 2 miles, and Torquay, 4 miles, has sailing, tennis and sports centre and coloured lights festoon the harbour by night. It has many good sandy beaches, giving it an almost Mediterranean feel. Inland is the medieval town of Totnes, with a castle and 16th-century buildings, and once a week, there is an Elizabethan and farmers’ market. From the quayside, there are boat trips down the River Dart to Dartmouth; the South Devon Railway runs steam trains to Buckfastleigh and along the coast to Kingswear, opposite Dartmouth. Take a ferry across to visit Dartmouth with its array of shops and restaurants, take a walk around the castle and enjoy one of the tea shops for a Devon cream tea. Within easy reach is the spectacular Dartmoor National Park. There are many tourist attractions close by including Agatha Christie’s summer home, Babbacombe’s model village and the award-winning Paignton Zoo. Away from the coast, visit Tavistock, where you can enjoy some dramatic scenery. There are many NT properties and plenty of surfing, swimming, sailing and angling. Torquay has a lot to offer, such as the Living Coasts, where the penguins wander freely, and the theatre which has shows all year round. The Roman city of Exeter is 15 miles, whilst bustling Torbay encompasses Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. Visit the yachting marina and a selection of fine gardens, in addition to Kent’s Cavern where the remains of some of Britain’s very earliest inhabitants were found. The properties make a cosy getaway for two or an extended family (total combined 22 guests), and the pets. The farm itself dates back to William the Conqueror and was mentioned in the Domesday Book survey of 1086. Explore the surrounding countryside either on foot in the neighbouring Blackdown Hills, or by car with the historic market town of Honiton and the majestic Jurassic Coast just a short drive away. There is also shared use of a heated indoor swimming pool to keep the kids entertained without the need for travelling, and ample space in which to kick a ball around or take the dogs for a well deserved walk. Younger children can entertain themselves in the enclosed play area with swings and sandpit whilst the young adults of the group can sink into a book or get online with wi-fi access in each of the properties.
    Swallow Cottage (ref 31207), Apple Cottage (ref 31206), Cider Cottage (ref 31208) and Haybarn Cottage (ref 31209) used to be an integral part of the working farm and date back to the Domesday Book although a lot has changed since then. All the cottages have been carefully restored with flagstone floors, oak beams and furnished with beautiful beds and ample furniture. Relax in front of the TV, get online or cook up a feast in the well-equipped kitchen. Swallow Cottage, Cider Cottage and Haybarn Cottage are all wheelchair-friendly. There’s also plenty of communal space around the farm including a marvellous, shared conservatory which overlooks a large, well-stocked fish pond for duck and moorhen watching. The conservatory can seat up to twenty two people for dinner and is a great sun trap. In the evening guests can light the woodburner for a little extra comfort and simply relax with a good book.
