Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. There are several good pubs and restaurants close by to have a break from the cooking, and for family fun the Big Sheep and the Milky Way adventure parks are not to be missed. Golf, riding, fishing, surfing, mountain boarding, karting and high ropes are available locally, and the wild beauty of Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moors are all within easy driving distance, as is the famous Eden Project. The historic and family friendly Bowgie Inn is adjacent and offers a wide selection of food as well as local beers and ciders, and sports fans can enjoy Sky coverage.     The market town of Ulverston (5 miles) offers a choice of shops, inns and restaurants, a championship golf course with superb views over Morecambe Bay, an excellent sports complex with swimming-pool and a Laurel and Hardy museum (Stan Laurel was born in the town). Many activities can be enjoyed in the immediate vicinity, including walking on fell, lakeside or mountain, sailing, wind-surfing and canoeing. The shores of Morecambe Bay are just 2½ miles away, where sea fishing is available. At the Grizedale Forest Enterprise Centre (4 miles), mountain bikes can be hired to cycle along the many forest trails which link the majority of the numerous stone and wood sculptures scattered among the trees.     Thanks to its proximity to the M6, Blackpool and Lancaster are very easily accessible, as are the Yorkshire Dales, Ribble Valley, Cumbria and the Lake District. Situated in the Forest of Bowland, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Barnacre Cottages are ideal for those who enjoy walking and outdoor activities. There are many footpaths and lanes to follow, including the popular Nicky Nook and Grizedale Valley walks, that follow the river through the valleys and up to the reservoirs. With wildlife in abundance, walking here is a pleasure. Take a break along the way at the nearby village of Scorton, with its café, coffee shop and pub. The popular market town of Garstang, 4 miles, offers a variety of individual shops and a weekly market every Thursday. A wider range of amenities can be found in the historic city of Lancaster, 12 miles, whose attractions include the castle, museum, Tropical Butterfly House, Dukes Theatre and Williamson Park, which hosts various events and plays throughout the summer.
    Further afield, a 45-minute drive will take you to Kendal in the Lake District. Windermere, Bowness and Ullswater possess attractions ranging from the World of Beatrix Potter, to a steam train ride at Ravenglass. For those who prefer a coastal landscape, the beautiful Fylde Coast is easily accessible from Barnacre.
    Blackpool, 15 miles, has many attractions for people of all ages including The Pleasure Beach, with its 235ft high Pepsi Max roller coaster, Blackpool Zoo, Sea Life Centre, Madame Tussauds, The Illuminations, which are held each autumn and the famous Blackpool Tower. Enjoy a donkey ride on Blackpool’s award-winning beaches.
