Find cottages in England

Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. With that in mind we’re going to make a few suggestions for some of our favourite English locations and activities.

Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. In fact, you only have to look at the effect it’s had over some of the country’s most influential poets and artists to gauge its beauty!

Alternatively, the south of England isn’t short of beauty either. Whether its Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline or the sleepy charms of the Cotswolds, you won’t be short of beautiful views and unrivalled tranquillity. Then again, if you like it loud and lively you’ll find some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hotspots to explore and enjoy. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. Further inland you have a variety of beautiful wide-open expanses to enjoy, with or without your four-legged friends. From the rolling limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales to the flats of Somerset, there are walks and to suit all ages and abilities. England’s history is long and varied and there are wonderful heritage attractions located all over the country, from stately homes and castles to museums, railways and festivals. In short, English holiday cottages are suitable for anyone who’s keen to relax and enjoy a wealth of options in some of the most stunning surrounds you could wish for.

Woodmans Stoup is situated in the conservation village of Colyford located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This detached Grade II Listed period farmhouse dates from the 17th century, but has origins that possibly date back earlier than this. The property is a traditionally built thatched cottage and has a number of leaded light windows, some of which are shuttered. The property itself has an immense amount of period character with many original features still insitu such as inglenook fireplaces, flagstone floors, exposed beams, timbers and window seats, all of which combine to create a delightful period ambience and an impressive holiday cottage. It has has been decorated and furnished to a high standard, is ideal for families or groups to get together and is decorated with a Christmas theme during the festive season. Colyford sits on the A3052 midway between Lyme Regis and Sidmouth, and one mile from the beach which is located on the World Heritage Coastline known as the Jurassic Coast. The property has gardens and grounds of about ¾ acre which surround the house and lie principally to the south. Worthy of special note is the delightful cobbled courtyard which is created by the house and barns which enclose it on three sides, ideal for al fresco dining. Within the grounds is the linhay barn, an attractive traditionally built building on two storeys which is built principally of stone under a re-thatched roof, making this a great games room. Also within the grounds is a detached cider barn complete with a very rare horse engine and original cider press. Colyford has a popular post office, general store and butcher which proves a great asset to the village. There are two public houses and a restaurant. The coastal resort of Seaton lies approximately 1 mile to the south and has a wide pebble beach, a small harbour at the mouth of the River Axe and direct access to the World Heritage Coast and South West Peninsular Coastal Path. The market town of Axminster lies about 5½ miles. To the east is the coastal resort of Lyme Regis and to the west are the fishing villages of Beer and Branscombe and the Regency Gothic town of Sidmouth. The county town of Exeter, 23 miles west, provides a comprehensive range of shopping facilities, theatres, and restaurants. Well worth a visit is Seaton Tramway; next to the tramway is the new Seaton Marshes Nature Reserve. The installation of a viewing hide and wheelchair-friendly paths means this beautiful area and its wildlife - wildfowl and wading birds in winter; dragonflies and butterflies in summer - are now easily accessible all year round.
