Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. In fact, you only have to look at the effect it’s had over some of the country’s most influential poets and artists to gauge its beauty!

Alternatively, the south of England isn’t short of beauty either. Whether its Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline or the sleepy charms of the Cotswolds, you won’t be short of beautiful views and unrivalled tranquillity. Then again, if you like it loud and lively you’ll find some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hotspots to explore and enjoy. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. Take a boat trip from Northiam and arrive at the fairytale Bodiam Castle, which is 4 miles away, or catch the Kent and East Sussex steam railway which travels to Tenterden, described by many as ’The Jewel of the Weald’. Cycling routes and excellent walking are close by. Horse riding stables can be found within a 15-minute drive away. Now in retirement, Darjeeling a famous Grand National champion horse resides at the property. Fishing is available nearby at Iden Wood Fishery (at cost, licence required). Located in the village of Salterforth, Cosy Cottage is the perfect retreat for couples wanting to explore the neighbouring counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. Close to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Forest of Bowland (AONB), the area is ideal for those who love the outdoors, with lots of walking and cycling opportunities, set in stunning scenery. The village of Salterforth is located in the Pendle area of Lancashire, although it was formerly part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The Leeds Liverpool Canal runs through the village and there are some lovely walks and cycle paths along the canal into Barnoldswick and Foulridge. You could also take a trip on a narrow boat from one of the moorings. The local pub, which is situated on the banks of the canal, is very historic. Dating back to the 1600’s, the original pub was actually underground and you can still see this today. The lively market town of Barnoldswick is just over a mile from the cottage and here you will find a good selection of shops, pubs and cafés. Due to its location on the Yorkshire/Lancashire border, there are lots of wonderful places to visit within easy driving distance. The highlights include the market town of Skipton (10 miles) with its castle, Haworth and Bronte Country (14 miles), Settle (16 miles) and Harrogate (30 miles). Manchester and Leeds are both around an hour’s drive. For those who prefer a coastal landscape, the Fylde coast, whose popular resorts include Blackpool and Lytham St Anne’s, can also be reached in around an hour. Shop and restaurant 1½ miles, pub 500 yards.

There are excellent riverside and woodland walks leading from the town and one of the most popular, is Wainwright’s famous Coast to Coast walk. Within easy reach are many historic houses and National Trust properties which really are worth a day trip to visit, as well as the wondrous splendour of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, which is within very easy driving distance. Perfect too for a day at the races, as Catterick Racecourse is only an 11-minute drive away and a little further afield, guests will be able to enjoy the splendour of the York races too (1-hour drive). Thirsk, Ripon, Yarm, Northallerton, Pickering and Leyburn are all close by and offer all of the welcoming hospitality that the county is famous for. There is even the opportunity to visit one of the dazzling Yorkshire beaches and coastline which is also only an hour’s drive away.

Braunton is the gateway to North Devon’s surfing area, and the well renowned beaches of Croyde, Saunton and Woolacombe offer some of the best sandy beaches and surf in the country. The backdrop to these beaches is the stunning South West Coast Path which offers some excellent walking with lovely views over the sea. There is plenty to do for all ages in the area including Clovelly, the lighthouse and quay at Hartland, the Big Sheep and Milky Way amusement parks, RHS Rosemoor at Torrington, cycling on the Tarka Trail or crabbing at Ilfracombe harbour. The regional town of Barnstaple has plenty of good shops and restaurants and the pannier market and Butcher’s Row are well worth a visit.     Swallow Barn is part of Great House Barns, the converted farmyard to the Great House. This unique holiday property is set on the owner’s 3-acre smallholding with chickens, pigs, bees and sheep grazing in the orchard and paddocks. It lies on the edge of the village, with good transport links, a beautiful coastline and a number of popular tourist attractions. The stone and cob built barns date back to the 16th century, and believed one stage to have been used by Judge Jeffries to hold prisoners before trial in Somerset. North Newton lies between the Somerset Levels and the Quantock Hills, England’s first designated AONB. The Bridgwater to Taunton Canal runs alongside the village and is a popular area for fishing, cycling or a quiet stroll to enjoy the range of wildlife in this wetland habitat. The Quantock Hills, Exmoor National Park and Blackdown Hills are all within easy reach. Swallow Barn is situated on the edge of the Somerset Levels with its battles and myths surrounding King Alfred. Around us are the Quantock, Polden and Brendan hills - fantastic for walkers and watchers of the wild horses and deer. The sandy beaches of Burnham are within 30 minutes’ drive, as are the pebble beaches near Kilve and East Quantoxhead and further sandy beaches at Minehead. Stop at the tea room at Maunsel Lock along the Bridgwater to Taunton Canal and take the boat through the lock and down to the bridge at Lower Maunsel, or follow the Space Walk along the towpath. A leisurely 15-minute walk will take you to the canal from the cottages to the railway at Bishops Lydeard. Enjoy shopping in Street at Clarks Village, or walk the Parrett Trail or Macmillan Way. Alternatively explore Glastonbury with its abbey and tor, or heritage houses and gardens such as Hestercombe Gardens, Montacute House, Tyntesfield House, Barrington Gardens, Dunster Castle, Muchelney Abbey, Cheddar with its gorge, caves and Jacobs Ladder and local produce on sale in the town.
