Holiday cottages in England need little introduction.     The village of Newchurch-in-Pendle which lies south of Pendle Hill, has a colourful history and is famous for the Pendle Witches who lived there during the 17th century. The neighbouring village of Barley, 1½ miles, is popular with walkers and often used as the starting point for a walk up Pendle Hill. It has a dog-friendly village pub, café, restaurant and picnic area. Drive on from Barley and time stands still in Downham (made famous by "Whistle Down the Wind" with Hayley Mills and many period dramas).

    The village of Fence, 2 miles, has a few good dining pubs as well as a village shop and post office. A wider range of amenities can be found in the market town of Colne, 7 miles, which has a good selection of shops and supermarkets as well as bars, restaurants, theatres and Boundary Mill which is popular with bargain hunters. Barrowford, 3 miles, is absolutely worth a visit with its coffee shops, wine bars, boutique shops and if the mood takes you, some great takeaways.

    Alternatively, on the north side of Pendle Hill lies Clitheroe, 6 miles, which offers wonderful shopping opportunities, a world-famous wine shop, and access to villages such as Waddington, with its real ale pubs.

    Being close to the Lancashire/Yorkshire border makes this property the ideal touring base, as there is so much to see and do within easy driving distance. Haworth and Brontë country are certainly worth a visit, 17 miles, as is Skipton where you can browse the shops and stop for a spot of lunch, or even try an award winning Stanforths pork pie. Wycoller Country Park is only 10 miles and is great for a quiet family walk along the river and visiting the ruins of Wycoller Hall. The Ribble Valley District is 15 miles away, which offers picturesque villages and welcoming country pubs. Should you wish to venture further afield, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is within a 45-minute drive, and just over an hour’s drive will take you to the Lake District. For those who enjoy the coast, why not visit the Fylde Coast with popular seaside resorts including Blackpool, Lytham, St Anne’s and Morecambe.

    Walking is one of the most popular activities in the area and there are walks to suit all levels of ability. It’s also a great area for fishing, cycling and golf.     This superb large stone house has been built in a most peaceful rural setting, away from all roads, in one-third of an acre of garden and about 7 miles inland from the east Devon coast. The two nearest resorts are Lyme Regis and Charmouth, both with sandy beaches and holiday entertainments. Chard and Axminster lie about 5 miles distant with shops and railway station
    Famous for its fine carpets, Axminster stills produces them today, with the original factory being found near the church. There are good examples of Georgian houses to be seen here, and for those interested in architecture, the National Trust property of Shute Barton close by survives as one of the most important non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages. A mixture of Gothic windows, battlemented turrets and Tudor gatehouse mingle together, reflecting the fact that it parts of it were built during two different centuries. Another interesting property to visit is the Old Bakery, together with the manor mill and forge at Branscome, set in one of Devon’s prettiest cob-and-thatch villages. Operational until 1987, it was the oldest traditional working bakery in Devon, and now serves as a tearoom, with the bakery equipment on display to the public. The lace-making and pottery town of Honiton lies within easy reach and has a selection of interesting shops and an annual fair held in July, whilst a little further afield is Yeovil, well known for its glove-making industry spanning 350 years. Riding and golf in the area.
    Lyme Regis is easily reached and the colourwashed cottages and elegant Regency and Victorian villas which line the seafront make this very photogenic town. Attractions for all the family include a museum of local history and geology, Dinosaurland and a marine aquarium. Seaton is within easy driving distance, and boasts a steep pebbly beach as well as an open-top tramway. Garage/shop 4 miles.

    Orchard House dates back to the 1870s and nestles on the edge of the village of Martham, which is conveniently located midway between the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea. The village has two pubs and a selection of shops and it is thought to have the only thatched fish and chips shop in Norfolk. The holiday property is full of charm and character with many original features, wooden floors and original fireplaces, making it ideal holiday accommodation at any time of the year. Orchard House is situated 3 miles from the lovely East Norfolk Coast seaside resort of Winterton-on-Sea, with its roots in fishing. Wonderful beaches with extensive sand dunes can be found here at this small village which has a few shops and a village pub. The sand dunes are nature reserve classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and ideal for bird watching and walking. Just north of Winterton is a colony of grey seals that can be regularly seen basking on the beach or popping their heads up over the waves.
    The traditional seaside resort of Great Yarmouth is 9 miles away with its pier entertainment and amusements and the Time and Tide Museum. The North Norfolk Coast is well worth exploring with its pretty coastal villages. For children, BeWILDerwood at Horning offers an outdoor tree house adventure park with zip wires, jungle bridges, marsh walks and boat trips which, when all combined, add up to a great day out. Alternatively, the fine city of Norwich, 15 miles, makes a good day out with cathedrals, museums, theatres and a vast array of cafés and shops. There is a wealth of National Trust properties to visit in the area which include Felbrigg Hall (one of the finest 17th-century country Jacobean houses in East Anglia) with its garden and parkland, Blickling Hall (a magnificent Jacobean house with woodlands and lakeside walks) and Sheringham Park (beautifully landscaped and renowned for its spectacular displays of azaleas and rhododendrons in late spring). There is also Horsey Windmill which is just 3 miles away. Walking and cycling can be enjoyed along the network of quiet lanes and the birdwatching is very rewarding. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Hayling Island is renowned for its windsurfing and sailing activities and local paddle - boarding and windsurfing lessons are available close by. Every year there is a national windsurfing event, and a plethora of sailing and nautical activity can be seen along the coastline. Many activities can be enjoyed locally, including golf, cycling, boat trips and scenic walks along the water’s edge or along the South Downs National Park which are within easy reach. Chichester with its beautiful cathedral, festival theatre, pedestrianised shopping, leisure centre, Roman Villa and Goodwood or Fontwell races is definitely worthy of a visit. Visit Portsmouth with waterside dining, ferry trips to the Isle of Wight, designer outlets, leisure facilities, Spinnaker Tower, Historic Dockyard including HMS Victory and the Mary Rose, or the maritime history at Southampton. Winchester, with its cathedral and abbey, and The New Forest are within easy driving distance. Plenty of National Trust homes and gardens can also be discovered nearby. Beach 5 yards.
