Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks.     Set amidst a wooded valley with a tranquil stream running alongside it, Provender House is the quintessential detached country house, the original mill stone now forms the doorstep and the pretty garden is edged by the stream. A short walk through woods to the beach is highly recommended. The pretty village of Veryan, which sits on the edge of the Roseland Peninsula is minutes away and offers a wonderful local pub serving local ales and food, a gallery and a shop. Along the peninsula visitors can find many beaches including Pendower and Carne, considered to be amongst the prettiest in Cornwall. There are also fishing villages with the day’s catch which guests can buy for that special meal or simple barbecue on the beach. The area is renowned for its beauty and dramatic coastline which provides hours of walking with stunning views across the open sea or inland across rolling fields. There is horse riding, golf and cycling within easy reach of the village. Further afield is Fowey, Truro, Padstow, St Ives and Falmouth which can be reached by passenger ferry from nearby St Mawes. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are easily reached and both well worth a visit. Truro has a theatre, cinema, a museum, plentiful local restaurants and excellent shopping. Falmouth has the historic docks and is home to the National Maritime Museum, with many hands-on exhibits for children of all ages. Pleasure cruises around this picturesque bay can be enjoyed, as can kayaking, river trips to Truro or simply meander the narrow streets. There are many cycle trails in the area many of which are linked and are mainly off road. Cycle hire centres are available and it is possible to cross the county by bike, or cycle through the Cornish industrial heritage sights and marvel at the ancient tin mines. The beaches of the peninsula and Cornwall are second to none and provide the ultimate day out for little cost. Rock pooling, crabbing and fishing as well as lazing on the fine white sand are all recommended. Shops and pub ¾ mile.

    Situated in the popular seaside resort of Scarborough, close to the shops and restaurants and just under a mile from the beach, this terraced townhouse is perfect for a family holiday. The owners have catered for the children with a games room that has lots of games plus a pool table. Mill View House is in a quiet area of the town. From the house you can walk to either bay, north or south, both having long sandy beaches making them ideal for families. The North Bay is the quieter of the two and the South Bay has all that you would expect of a traditional seaside resort with donkeys, amusements and children’s rides. You can walk on the promenade the full length of both bays passing the castle perched up on the hillside. If you prefer to take a ride there’s an open top double decker bus that runs along the seafront.

    Scarborough has many attractions with the open air theatre, the Scarborough Spa and the Stephen Joseph Theatre. On your walk down to the beach you pass Peasholm Park with it’s beautiful gardens and large lake, a fabulous place to take the kids, there’s boats and pedalos for them to play on. This is also where they do the famous re-enactment of a naval warfare miniature sea battle. The house is situated less than two minutes walk from the train station where you can go by train to York, a medieval city famous for its Minster. There’s so much to do in Scarborough which is why it’s popular both in the summer and winter months. An ideal spot for that family holiday.

    Scarborough is just one of many family resorts down the east coast. Further down the coast and just a short drive away is Filey, Flamborough Head and of course the Victorian resort of Bridlington. There’s some fantastic walks along the cliff tops as this is part of the Cleveland Way so very popular amongst walkers. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton is just a few minutes drive away where you can see puffins, gannets and seals in their natural habitat. This is one of the most visited bird sanctuary in the UK.

    Set within the pretty Fenland village of Welney, Croft House is a rustic Victorian property which has been lovingly restored with authentic original features from its past. It keeps its original pine floorboards and doors (some with etched glass), slate fireplaces (one with Victorian tiles), plus the dinner set is English China from Royal Worcester. Previously the village shop, the glass frontage has been retained to allow the light to flood in, while wooden shutters have been thoughtfully placed to provide privacy to guests. The waterway which runs in front of the house and under the garden is called Croft River. In earlier days, it was much wider and was used to transport the stone blocks which were used to build Ely Cathedral, which still stands proud to this day overlooking the Fens and is, in fact, known as The Ship of the Fens. Croft House has been furnished to provide lots of light and space for its discerning guests and the owner has been careful to maintain floor space by using clever decorating tricks such as replacing heavy furniture such as wardrobes with artisan coat stands. Locally, there is much to explore beyond the magnificent cathedral. In Ely, you will also find The Stained Glass Museum, the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum, which tells the fascinating story of how the Fenlands were created, and lots of artisan shops, cafés and restaurants. Welney Wetland Centre offers visitors year-round opportunities to view wildlife, and The Fens themselves are the home to many species of birds. A trip to the university city of Cambridge is also a must, with its wealth of museums, including The Fitzpatrick and its numerous colleges. There are lots of walking tours available, along with opportunities to go punting on the River Cam. Also worth a visit is the Hanseatic port of Kings Lynn, with its picturesque old quarter. And, for a change of pace, you can be at the coast in under an hour and enjoy the wide sandy beach at Hunstanton, known by the locals as ‘Sunny Hunny’. Add in lots of walks, cycle routes and many great places to eat and you will see why this has become such a popular area to visit.     This superb large stone house has been built in a most peaceful rural setting, away from all roads, in one-third of an acre of garden and about 7 miles inland from the east Devon coast. The two nearest resorts are Lyme Regis and Charmouth, both with sandy beaches and holiday entertainments. Chard and Axminster lie about 5 miles distant with shops and railway station.

    Famous for its fine carpets, Axminster stills produces them today, with the original factory being found near the church. There are good examples of Georgian houses to be seen here, and for those interested in architecture, the National Trust property of Shute Barton close by survives as one of the most important non-fortified manor houses of the Middle Ages. A mixture of Gothic windows, battlemented turrets and Tudor gatehouse mingle together, reflecting the fact that it parts of it were built during two different centuries. Another interesting property to visit is the Old Bakery, together with the manor mill and forge at Branscome, set in one of Devon’s prettiest cob-and-thatch villages. Operational until 1987, it was the oldest traditional working bakery in Devon, and now serves as a tearoom, with the bakery equipment on display to the public. The lace-making and pottery town of Honiton lies within easy reach and has a selection of interesting shops and an annual fair held in July, whilst a little further afield is Yeovil, well known for its glove-making industry spanning 350 years. Riding and golf in the area.

    Lyme Regis is easily reached and the colourwashed cottages and elegant Regency and Victorian villas which line the seafront make this very photogenic town. Attractions for all the family include a museum of local history and geology, Dinosaurland and a marine aquarium. Seaton is within easy driving distance, and boasts a steep pebbly beach as well as an open-top tramway. Garage/shop 4 miles.

    Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
    There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
    This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
    In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.

    A superb choice of cottages
    Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
    Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
    Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

    Tuckenhay is renowned for its spectacular award winning indoor pools with glass mosaics and hand-painted silk murals, they combine exotic decoration with the most modern dehumidification and purification equipment and full changing facilities.
    ROMAN POOL
    This dramatic Roman style 32ft pool (4ft 6in deep) has a safe children’s bay reached by separate steps. Completing the experience are sauna and steam room (£1 by slot meter), a refreshing cool drench shower fed from the underground spring and a separate Jacuzzi with hydro jets.
    Open daily from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm. Children must be supervised.
    WATERFALL POOL
    This award winning pool is sculptured in a curved shape over 40ft long (4ft 6in deep), and bounded in part by a natural grotto rock face of tumbling water. It incorporates the ultimate in water movement technology: floor and wall massage jets, water volcanoes, water cannons and swim jets. There are two Jacuzzis - one in the pool - sauna and steam room (£1 by slot meter) and hot and cold spring-fed showers.
    Separate mother and baby changing facilities with walk-in shower/wet room. Open daily from 8.30 am to 6.30 pm. Adults and children over ten with a swimming adult.
    The extra charge for use of pools and heating, detailed in the cottage descriptions is all inclusive in the final balance.

    This 60ft pool (3ft - 6ft 6in deep) has landscaped riverside sunbathing terrace and sloping lawn to stream. Open daily 8am to 8pm (1 May–1 Oct). Children must be supervised.

    Tuckenhay Mill has led the way with most of the pools being heated by ground source heat pumps. Awards have been given for energy saving as well as pool design and conversion of buildings. 2008 saw the extension of the 20 acres of stunning natural landscape opening up nearly a mile of footpaths through dells, meadows and woodlands along with a natural waterfall. This is the place to enjoy a personal ‘Spring or Autumn Watch’ with swallows in the log store, buzzards on the adjacent hillside, owls in the woods and ducks and swans down on Bow Creek. Strolls can be taken with the dog and picnics enjoyed on a bench by the river. Children can stroke the goats and even collect eggs for breakfast from the hens (when laying)!
