England

Holiday cottages in England need little introduction. After all, a cottage break is really the quintessential English holiday, and we think there are few better ways to explore the wonderful history and heritage the country has to offer. But with so many beautiful locations – and so much to see and do – your only problem may be deciding where to enjoy your break. With that in mind we’re going to make a few suggestions for some of our favourite English locations and activities.

Choose one of our featured English cottages in the north and you could explore the unrivalled beauty of the Lakes. This gloriously unspoiled region has been attracting visitors for hundreds of years. In fact, you only have to look at the effect it’s had over some of the country’s most influential poets and artists to gauge its beauty!

Alternatively, the south of England isn’t short of beauty either. Whether its Dorset’s stunning Jurassic coastline or the sleepy charms of the Cotswolds, you won’t be short of beautiful views and unrivalled tranquillity. Then again, if you like it loud and lively you’ll find some of Europe’s most vibrant urban hotspots to explore and enjoy. London is obviously a huge draw with tourists and holidaymakers but you’re guaranteed a fantastic cosmopolitan experience in some of England’s other major cities too: Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, York, Chester and more all offer wonderful shopping with fine dining and some justly celebrated heritage.

England’s landscape is as varied as it is beautiful, so you won’t be surprised to find it’s suitable for a wealth of different breaks. If you fancy beaches then you’ll be spoiled for choice with the golden sands of Cornwall and Devon, the wild shorelines of Northumberland or the traditional seaside heritage of Great Yarmouth, Brighton and Blackpool. Further inland you have a variety of beautiful wide-open expanses to enjoy, with or without your four-legged friends. From the rolling limestone hills of the Yorkshire Dales to the flats of Somerset, there are walks and to suit all ages and abilities. England’s history is long and varied and there are wonderful heritage attractions located all over the country, from stately homes and castles to museums, railways and festivals. In short, English holiday cottages are suitable for anyone who’s keen to relax and enjoy a wealth of options in some of the most stunning surrounds you could wish for.

If you’re ready to begin your exploration, take a look at our featured holiday cottages in England today.

    Ref: CC244082
Situated in the popular seaside resort of Scarborough, close to the shops and restaurants and just under a mile from the beach, this terraced townhouse is perfect for a family holiday. The owners have catered for the children with a games room that has lots of games plus a pool table. Mill View House is in a quiet area of the town. From the house you can walk to either bay, north or south, both having long sandy beaches making them ideal for families. The North Bay is the quieter of the two and the South Bay has all that you would expect of a traditional seaside resort with donkeys, amusements and children’s rides. You can walk on the promenade the full length of both bays passing the castle perched up on the hillside. If you prefer to take a ride there’s an open top double decker bus that runs along the seafront.

On your walk down to the beach you pass Peasholm Park with it’s beautiful gardens and large lake, a fabulous place to take the kids, there’s boats and pedalos for them to play on. This is also where they do the famous re-enactment of a naval warfare miniature sea battle. The house is situated less than two minutes walk from the train station where you can go by train to York, a medieval city famous for its Minster. There’s so much to do in Scarborough which is why it’s popular both in the summer and winter months. An ideal spot for that family holiday.

"Sands flanked by rock, with wooded cliffs above – true Devon coastal character . . ."

The wooded cliffs at Bolt Tail form a backdrop to this sandy cove on what is renowned as one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South Hams. These holiday cottages are set within 100 yards of the safe sandy beach – an unrivalled position for enjoying the seaside, but also perfect for fishing, sailing and water-skiing (with a dinghy-launching slip 200 yards away, and facilities for larger boats at nearby Salcombe). The cottages are in the centre of this charming seaside village, with its pretty thatched cottages, inns, restaurants and small shop within a short walk. The South Devon Coastal Footpath winds along the cliffs and through Hope Cove between Salcombe and Thurlestone, with opportunities for magnificent walking amongst glorious coastal scenery.
The maritime attractions continue slightly further afield. Salcombe, 4 miles away, is one of the most prestigious sailing centres in the country. It offers extensive sandy beaches, too, and a wide choice of fascinating shops, boutiques and restaurants in its quaintly winding narrow streets. The estuary here is a kaleidoscope of brightly coloured craft of all kinds at their moorings – a paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Thurlestone, 2 miles to the west, can be reached either by car or via the coastal path. It boasts yet more expanses of golden sands, a regular feature of this lovely coastline. But, in addition, it has a superb cliff-top links golf course, edged by sandy coves, tennis courts and picturesque streets of thatched cottages overlooking the bay. Kingsbridge, the ‘capital’ of the South Hams, has a good choice of interesting shops, a museum and a sports centre with squash, badminton and bowling. Boating and diving trips can be arranged in the Salcombe Estuary, and boats are available for hire. Within easy driving distance are the historic cities of Plymouth and Exeter and Kitley Caves. The wide open spaces and breathtaking scenery of the Dartmoor National Park are less than an hour by car, and there are many National Trust properties, stately homes and interesting gardens within a short drive. Anchor Cottages are set in a little terrace in the village. They have been designed to offer ‘upside-down’ accommodation, with first floor living rooms. Comfortably furnished, each has a small first floor sitting-out area with furniture. They are ideally located for a Devon holiday by the sea. Shop/P.O. 50 yards.

    Ref: CDDJ

Set within the pretty Fenland village of Welney, Croft House is a rustic Victorian property which has been lovingly restored with authentic original features from its past. It keeps its original pine floorboards and doors (some with etched glass), slate fireplaces (one with Victorian tiles), plus the dinner set is English China from Royal Worcester. Previously the village shop, the glass frontage has been retained to allow the light to flood in, while wooden shutters have been thoughtfully placed to provide privacy to guests. The waterway which runs in front of the house and under the garden is called Croft River. In earlier days, it was much wider and was used to transport the stone blocks which were used to build Ely Cathedral, which still stands proud to this day overlooking the Fens and is, in fact, known as The Ship of the Fens. Croft House has been furnished to provide lots of light and space for its discerning guests and the owner has been careful to maintain floor space by using clever decorating tricks such as replacing heavy furniture such as wardrobes with artisan coat stands. Locally, there is much to explore beyond the magnificent cathedral. In Ely, you will also find The Stained Glass Museum, the Prickwillow Drainage Engine Museum, which tells the fascinating story of how the Fenlands were created, and lots of artisan shops, cafés and restaurants. Welney Wetland Centre offers visitors year-round opportunities to view wildlife, and The Fens themselves are the home to many species of birds. A trip to the university city of Cambridge is also a must, with its wealth of museums, including The Fitzpatrick and its numerous colleges. There are lots of walking tours available, along with opportunities to go punting on the River Cam. Also worth a visit is the Hanseatic port of Kings Lynn, with its picturesque old quarter. And, for a change of pace, you can be at the coast in under an hour and enjoy the wide sandy beach at Hunstanton, known by the locals as ‘Sunny Hunny’. Add in lots of walks, cycle routes and many great places to eat and you will see why this has become such a popular area to visit. And, after a long day of fun and adventures, you can relax at Croft House and enjoy sweet dreams in one of the high quality beds that have been provided for your comfort, just another reason why Croft House is such a great choice. Shop 6½ miles, pub and restaurant 100 yards.
