The county of Yorkshire has a lot to offer visitors with a varied landscape of dales, moors and coast, a rich historical heritage, fascinating cities, market towns and picturesque villages. Yorkshire has a very distinctive character and is rightly considered one of Britain’s premier holiday destinations.

Once you arrive in Yorkshire you’ll see why it’s called ‘God’s Own County’. Take for example the wild, beautiful expanse of the Yorkshire Dales, which actually consists of lots of different Dales each with their own unique character, covering in total some 554 square miles of heather moorland, rich pasture land, and characterful Dale’s villages and of course dry stone walls. Much of this area is protected and forms the famous Dales National Park; the perfect place for walking and cycling amongst some of Britain’s most stunning landscapes.

To the east is another National Park; The North York Moors National Park extends all the way to the Yorkshire coast. This is a place of wide open spaces and wind swept heather moorland, an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways as well as hidden valleys where you’ll discover pretty villages. It’s also home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam railway which runs from Pickering to Whitby (and back) and is a great day out for both adults and children.

The Yorkshire coast has been attracting holidaymakers since Victorian times and is renowned for its pretty fishing villages and bustling coastal resorts such as Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Here you’ll find family friendly clean sandy beaches and plenty of activities for visitors of all ages. The picturesque town of Whitby clusters around its fishing harbour where fishing boats and pleasure cruisers come and go. High above the town Whitby Abbey dominated the skyline and can be reached with a vigorous walk up some 199 steps.

To the south are the family resorts of Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington. Scarborough has two lovely horseshoe bays with golden sands and plenty to offer families and couples looking for a traditional seaside break. Filey and Bridlington also have lovely beaches and coastal promenades.

And there’s plenty more to Yorkshire including the wonderfully historical city of York, internationally renowned for its medieval architecture that includes one of the finest buildings in Europe; York Minster. Then there’s the Yorkshire Wolds; a quiet and peaceful place of undulating countryside and market towns.     Scarborough has many attractions with the open air theatre, the Scarborough Spa and the Stephen Joseph Theatre. On your walk down to the beach you pass Peasholm Park with it’s beautiful gardens and large lake, a fabulous place to take the kids, there’s boats and pedalos for them to play on. This is also where they do the famous re-enactment of a naval warfare miniature sea battle. The house is situated less than two minutes walk from the train station where you can go by train to York, a medieval city famous for its Minster. There’s so much to do in Scarborough which is why it’s popular both in the summer and winter months. An ideal spot for that family holiday.

    Scarborough is just one of many family resorts down the east coast. Further down the coast and just a short drive away is Filey, Flamborough Head and of course the Victorian resort of Bridlington. There’s some fantastic walks along the cliff tops as this is part of the Cleveland Way so very popular amongst walkers. The RSPB bird sanctuary at Bempton is just a few minutes drive away where you can see puffins, gannets and seals in their natural habitat. This is one of the most visited bird sanctuary in the UK.

Surrounded by magnificent parkland, it contains fine furniture and paintings, as well as Britain’s largest private collection of dress from the 17th-century to the present day. The attractive town of Pickering at the southern foot of the moors, is home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, which travels across Heartbeat country. The city of York can be reached in an hour or so, with its superb museums, excellent shops and splendid minster. Flamingo Land and Ayton Castle are also nearby. There is an excellent golf course at Ganton (2 miles) and first-class riding stables at Snainton (7 miles). Good pubs and restaurants can be found in the surrounding villages. The promenade is just perfect for an evening stroll with your dog or you can venture the cobbled streets that are lined with inns, tea rooms, restaurants and gift shops, where friendly locals wait to greet you. There are also many activities for all ages including swimming, sailing, surfing, pony rides and fishing trips. It is also ideal for keen walkers and cyclists with the famous Cleveland Way finishing/starting at Filey Brigg.
