Yorkshire is a place of many contradictions. It is as modern as it is old; as rugged as it is upmarket, and as beautiful as it is wild. It’s no surprise that this fascinating county has inspired so many writers, poets and artists throughout the years. Mary Shelley famously wrote Dracula from the Gothic town of Whitby, while Emily Bronte set Wuthering Heights on the moors around her home at Haworth.

When you are staying in a rural Yorkshire cottage with a private pool, you will soon find out what they found so inspirational about this place. From the Dales to the Moors, and the historic city of York, there is so much to explore that it will take your breath away.

To see the best of the Yorkshire countryside, find a cottage with a pool near Skipton (AKA ‘The Gateway to the Dales’) or Bedale (between the Dales and the Moors), or find a quiet spot near a traditional village such as Danby, Muker, Rosedale Abbey or Reeth, which are surrounded by dramatic landscape on all sides.

If you have access to a car, you can spend a few days travelling around some of the lesser known attractions of the Yorkshire countryside, such as the Oldest Sweet Shop in England (at Pateley Bridge), the Wenseleydale Dairy Farms at Hawes, the waterfalls at Malham and the pretty stone bridges and houses of Glaisedale, Ingleton and Helmsley.

For walking holidays, choose a rural holiday cottage with a pool in the midst of one of Yorkshire’s national parks. In the Yorkshire Dales AONB, the villages of Kettlewell and Grassington are perfectly placed for walking adventures, while in the Yorkshire Moors AONB, Goathland, Pickering, Harwood Dale and Kirkbymoorside all offer unparalleled views of the dramatic scenery.

Cottages with swimming pools by the coast will allow you to experience a part of Yorkshire which is often overlooked – the beaches. The weather may be far from tropical, but that doesn’t take anything away from the beauty of these stunning beaches, from the white cliffs of Bridlington and Flamborough, to the quaint charm of Filey and Robin Hood’s Bay.

And if all that fresh air is wearing you out, simply head to the picturesque spa town of Harrogate for a rest, before curling up with a good book at your private cottage retreat.
