Find cottages in Selby

The town of Selby is located on the River Ouse amongst the rural Yorkshire countryside and is conveniently placed for exploring the tranquil Yorkshire Wolds to the east and York and the Vale of York to the north.

Selby Abbey, which was founded in 1069, is one of Britian''s largest parish churches. It features a mixture of Victorian, Gothic and Norman architecture, and despite damage by fire and subsidence in the past, is one of the country’s most impressive medieval abbeys. Built to plans modelled on Durham Cathedral, the abbey contains impressive moulded and carved capitals and stained glass work.

In town the 19th century Crescent that curves away from James Street was modelled on Bath''s Lonsdown Crescent. Other sites of interest include the Cholera burial ground, close to the abbey, and the 14th century Market Place.

There are regular drama, dance, comedy and music performances in Selby Town Hall, one of Yorkshire''s best live venues with the annual Battle Of The Bands being a particularly popular event.

The relatively flat terrain is perfect of walkers and cyclists; the Trans-Pennine Trail cycleway runs by Selby and up to centre of York. Further afield there are lovely days out discovering the pretty villages and vales of the Yorkshire Wolds or maybe hop on the train for a spot of first class shopping in Leeds or York.
