Goathland is the centre of Heartbeat country and boasts a pretty village green lined with curio shops, inns and tea rooms. From Grosmont, the North York Moors steam train makes for a memorable journey through the stunning moorland scenery and the glorious Esk Valley into the market town of Pickering. The heritage coastline of Yorkshire is easily reached with spectacular cliff top walks affording breath-taking views across the coast and many quaint fishing villages awaiting discovery. The ancient sea port of Whitby is close by, known for its connections with Capt. James Cook, and is where Bram Stoker found his inspiration and Dracula was born.     THE CHARACTER OF HUNGATE
    The cottages have been converted with great flair by the owners, Mike and Sue Kitching, from the outbuildings of Hungate House. The delightful setting includes eight secluded gardens, courtyards and an orchard, as well as a safe, enclosed play area for children. Each cottage retains much character, with old stone arches, fireplaces and beams carefully retained. Immaculately maintained, warm, clean and superbly well-equipped, these cottages are truly a ‘home from home’. No wonder so many visitors return time and again. The owners provide plenty of helpful information on the huge choice of places to visit, as well as menus from the local restaurants. Visitors have unlimited free use of Pickering’s swimming pool, 1 free multi-entry car pass to Dalby Forest (two passes with Hungate Garden Cottage - ICH), free entry to Eden Camp, an exciting children’s adventure playground, and free entry to Ryedale Folk Musem. Free entry for Eden Camp and Ryedale Folk Museum are only applicable for stays of 7 nights or more.
    Hungate is best summed up by a visitor who wrote, "There was nothing more we could have wished for in a holiday home. We loved the fire, the free logs and little touches such as fresh flowers – it felt like home. The children loved the freedom of the gardens and could not wait to get home from our excursions! We loved coming and going through the heavy black gate into an oasis in this nice town."

    The Anchorage is a picturesque fisherman’s cottage, in an enviable, south-facing position right on the quayside in the pretty fishing village of Staithes. This holiday cottage boasts the most wonderful views across the harbour and into the bay, the perfect place to sit and relax. The property is tucked snugly underneath the cliffs which rise to the rear. This well-equipped and cosy property is furnished to a very good standard, retaining much character with many delightful features and charming paintings of Staithes.


    There is vehicular access and parking for 2 cars outside the property (for which permits are provided), a rare commodity in Staithes.


    Staithes is tucked into a cleft of rock which forms a natural harbour in this rugged path of coastline north of Whitby. This is an excellent base from which to explore the North Yorkshire Moors and the coast, and is renowned amongst walkers. The famous Cleveland Way on the cliff side is very close by, from which beautiful walks and views can be enjoyed.


    The beach, renowned for its fossil hunting, is on your doorstep, and the village, with its cobbled streets, restaurants/tea shops and art gallery, is an enchanting place to discover.


    Staithes has historical, seafaring connections, and Captain James Cook, discoverer of Australia, lived in Staithes between 1745-46 working as a grocer’s apprentice, and this is where he first gained his passion for the sea.


    The town has a long association with artists, who have flocked here since the 1900s, whereupon a group formed, known as the ‘Staithes group of artists’, including Laura Knight and George Wetherill (the ’Turner’ of the north). Countless artists have and still do visit Staithes regularly and find inspiration among the huddled cottages, winding paths, towering cliffs and wild seas. This association with art is still strong, with painting breaks and tuition held in the village. To celebrate this history, each September residents open up their houses displaying local artists work for the public to see.


    The children’s CBEEBIES programme ‘Old Jack’s Boat’, featuring Bernard Cribbins and his dog Salty, is set and filmed in Staithes - a very exciting prospect for the younger visitors to the town! Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.
